Gran Turismo 6: Drive in Real Life to Design A Track w/ GPS Data

Gran Turismo 6 will include a mobile app that allows you to create your own race track — by driving the track yourself, in real life.

The Course Maker, which will not be available upon initial release of the game, will allow you to design your own track through traditional means, but can also generate a track through GPS data. Download the app, start recording, then drive around whatever interesting local streets and highways you always wished you could speed through at 200 mph.

The Course Maker’s description reads:

“This feature, available at a later stage through an update, will allow you to create your own custom tracks that can be driven in the game. Additionally, in another update we will add the possibility to generate a track by capturing the GPS coordinate data of a mobile app while you are driving that course. This GPS-generated tracks will be available in the game as playable content.”

Conceptually, this is a fascinating feature. Practically, I am imagining all the ways the technology can botch this.

Gran Turismo 6 releases on PlayStation 3 — and only the PS3 — on Dec. 5. There will be no PS4 release.
