How to Install to HD with No Lag

Work-In-Progress – Check back as we update with new details.

  1. Follow the in-game instructions and complete the mandatory “Install” Disc 1 installation to the Xbox 360 HDD.
  2. Don’t install “Play” Disc 2 to the Xbox 360 HDD. Instead, install to an external USB thumb drive.
  3. Use a 16 GB thumb drive for best results.

Did this method work for you? Sounds off in the comments!

@Manuel,

What part is giving you trouble? Basically, you’ll need to install the “Play” disc onto an external harddrive plugged in through one of the extra USB ports on your Xbox 360 — the same ports where you might plug-in a controller.

I’m having trouble installing the “Play” Disc to a USB drive.
I’ve installed the installation disk to my Xbox 360 HDD and then running the game from the disk but I wan’t to run the play disk from the external USB drive instead.

I’ve just bought a compatible 8GB USB Flash drive and followed the instructions through http://www.xbox.com/storage. The Xbox 360 says it’s compatible with no issues.

Where do I get the option to install the “Play” disk to the USB Flash Drive??? Am I missing something obvious?

I’ve tried deleting everything off the HDD and installing again from scratch but still no option to install the play disk to my 8GB USB drive. Has anybody already done this and had any luck with it that they could share?

my question is if you need to install disc 2 to USB, if I can just play the game without installing?

@Manuel,

No, you don’t need to install the “Play” disc at all to enjoy GTA 5. This is just an extra option for those that do want to install the “Play” disc onto their HDD for some improved load-times and performance.

@Rory,

Hmm! Can you delete the installation file from your HDD separately from the save files? Usually installation files are stored in the Memory section of the Xbox Options tab. Just locate GTA 5 down the list, open it, and it should list save files next to any installation files. Then you can simply delete the instal and re-install on a thumb-drive.

I haven’t tried this myself for GTA 5, but this is how I do it on 360 for other games. If I’m wrong, please let me know, I’m sure other people are experiencing the same issue.

I had to load on usb becouse of my hard drive was full and I never had an issure with lag. I have a 20g hard drive in x-box a 8G usb a 16G usb a 64G usb and 1 usb which is 850Gigs which I have not formatted for the x-box yet I don’t think it will be able to recognize it though.

when playing online lag is not always the game. connection of everyone on server and the server alone can cause this. put save files on different usb from the game. It helps with the online play which autosaves alot. which could be causing your game to lag.

I have already installed disk 1 on a thumb drive, is it possible to download disk 2 on ANOTHER thumb drive and run both??

I recently dowloaded the game to my hard drive and it was laggy until the first autosave. I believe since i used the disks the first few times i played it, once it saved it linked my digital download from the Internet to the hard copy download from disk one (rented the game once)
