Grand Theft Auto Offline: Problems Plaugue GTA Online Launch
Grand Theft Auto Online is now live, but launch day bugs and glitches are making entry into the multiplayer version of Los Santos about as easy as getting through the Korean Demilitarized Zone.
As our friends across the pond and anyone who got up early for the 7 a.m. Eastern grand opening have learned, Grand Theft Auto Online is unplayable for many. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto Online Support page runs down the many connectivity issues and in-game glitches, including Rockstar servers being unavailable, hour-long loading times to get into the first online mission, freezing, corrupted saves that make online characters unusable, and more.
Rockstar Support’s Twitter account is also filled with complaints about Grand Theft Auto Online, and the response from Rockstar for now on the many issues is, “We are looking into this.” The devs also direct players to the GTA Online Launch Status page, where it is listing known issues and fixes. For now (9 a.m. EST), here is what Rockstar is working on:
- Occasional “Rockstar Cloud Servers Unavailable” error message
- Freezing sometimes while loading into first race in GTAO with “waiting for other players” on the screen
- Intermittent “Failed to Host a GTA Online Session” error messages
- Race Corona (start area, marker) occasionally not showing up for first race
The problems are likely only going to get worse in the short term as more players across the country wake up and try to log in for the first time. The best advice at this point is to Keep Calm and Wait for Rockstar to Issue a Patch. We’ll completely ignore that advice later today when we at least attempt to log in for a Grand Theft Auto Online live stream at 1 p.m. Pacific.
On a final note: based on the comments and tweets, there are a ton of seriously angry GTA players out there. Frustration is understandable, and yes, Rockstar could have done better with stress testing, but many are going inexplicably overboard. This was bound to happen with an online game this huge and with so many players. Thinking otherwise ignores the history of launches of all huge online games. It will get fixed, but this is clearly a work in progress.
