GTA 5 Trailer Teases Multiplayer Mode. We Have Questions
So, first things first. If you haven’t watched the new Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer yet, stop what you’re doing and go do that (and read our analysis) right away. If you like Grand Theft Auto games, it’s important. This is the first gameplay footage we’ve seen of Rockstar’s forthcoming open-world
murder simulator crime thriller, and it’s out September 17. Get on that.
Next, let’s take a break at 4:33 in the above trailer and talk about what we’re seeing there. “And then, there’s Grand Theft Auto Online,” the kindly narrator reveals, while a beanie-wearing character looks out from a skyscraper upon Los Santos, but in (what appears to be) some sort of multiplayer battlefield mode. We’ll get more information “soon,” the narrator teases.
In the meantime, here are some observations and questions raised by the aforementioned tease:
You can clearly see that there are other players in the map, with names like “GTAVDev14″
We’re seeing two distinct vehicles (helicopters and cars) being used.
Will this feature work like an MMO, where you can interact with huge numbers of players in an open world? Or, are we seeing a smaller “match” happening between a fixed number? It’s difficult to tell, but given that you can see player handles from seemingly miles away, it would (to us) suggest that we’re seeing a smaller set of players interact. Perhaps limited to a match, or a friends a list.
Additionally, at 1:42 in the video notice there’s a fourth character slot in the bottom right. There are only three playable characters you can switch between, so who’s the fourth slot for? Perhaps friends can pop into each other’s GTA 5 games?
Ok, let’s go a little more out on a limb here. At 3:30, we’re given a look at the “heist planning” feature, whereby players decide on a specific strategy to execute a particular mission. For instance, while robbing a jewelry store, it appears players can either “go in smart” with gas and limited firepower, or “loud and dumb,” run-and-gun style. So, will players perhaps be able to plan heists with friends? We can hope, can’t we?
