GTA III Finally Comes To PSN
Sony has just released the details on the new titles coming to Playstation 3 and PS Vita this week. There are the obvious new AAA releases like Dead or Alive 5 for consoles and Little BigPlanet for Vita (which is also available on PSN), but the big news is that at long, long, long last, the original reason for hold-outs to finally shell out the cash for a Playstation 2 is coming to PSN. I’m talking, of course, about Grand Theft Auto III.
Allow me to say something literally everyone else in the world has said before. It is impossible to describe the world after GTA III without using phrases like ‘life-changing’, ‘paradigm shift’, ‘nothing will ever be the same again’ and so on. One review accompanying the game’s 2001 release called it “one of the most complete experiences I have ever encountered,” which only sounds like Hyperbole if you never saw anything prior to it. As we found with the iOs release late last year, it mostly holds up rather well. The character models are awful and voice actors read their lines like they’re trying to get through an unpleasant book extremely fast, but it’s still an incredible experience topped only by numerous successors and imitators that owe everything to it. Which is why it was the first PS2 game that made the console a smart choice; you’d best believe that one makor reason for Playstation 2′s enormous success is that Sony had an exclusive deal with Rockstar games that lasted through San Andreas’ 2004 release.
So now, 12 years later it’s finally coming to Playstation Network. If that sounds dumb to you, it should. PSN has been until very recently a horrible service. Once backward compatibility was removed from PS3, the lack of downloadable PS2 games was a serious problem. Finally, that silly oversight has been amended. And speaking of long overdue things, the Ratchet and Clank Collection will also be available this week. It contains the original trilogy – Ratchet & Clank, Going Commando, and Up Your Arsenal – and they’ve been mastered for HD and have trophies. If you’re not downloading GTA III, this is the packet you need to splurge on.
