GTA IV Runs at 630p on PS3, But Who Cares?

gta-iv.jpg

In another case of news that makes up fanboys’ dreams, we’ve got another case of missing Ps. This time it’s Grand Theft Auto IV on PlayStation 3, which has been discovered to run at only 630p – well short of the 720p you find in the 360 version.

You can find a fairly simple explanation of what that means on Kotaku, but anyone who’s played the game or checked out GameVideos’ side-by-side comparison of the game knows that the game looks great on both consoles. There’s a slight difference with the color palettes in the two versions, and the slightly warmer colors in the PS3 version might just be a result of Rockstar using the processing power on something other than displaying those extra 90 lines.

Ultimately, while fanboys might bicker and argue about which technical detail makes for the superior version, the rest of us can go on with enjoying a terrific game.

PS3 has true FP16 HDR at 630p while Xbox360 has a mere FP10 MDR(hence the dithering while attempting to draw HDR textures and lighting) but is 720p.

It is surprising that Rockstar could not get the the PS3 running at a higher res or perhaps they simply did not have enough time to optimise. For example, GT5 Prologue runs twice as many cars with twice as many polygons, at twice the frame-rate and almost twice the resolution of PGR4.

Still, perhaps it’s because Rockstar has never really been expert at playstation hardware. Even their greatest attempt at PS2 graphics, San Andreas, looked like crap next to the Getaway and other games on that system. They do make amazing games from a gameplay point of view though.

Actually, it was found to be 640p on the b3yond forums. It doesn’t mean much, but it would be nice if you checked your facts before putting up the article.

Guess who does get it in 1080 (1920×1080)

Thats right, you guessed it… PC
We may have to wait longer but we always get the best stuff.

GTAIV? Why are people still talking about this game? :???: At best it deserves a 6/10…

-Camera is horrible (in car and on foot)
-Aiming is horrible (for all weapons)
-Graphics… (don’t get me started)
-Amount of stuff you can do. (Compared to San Andreas… IV is a ripoff)

Heres another game subject to “Multiplatform Dog Poop Syndrome”. Where a great franchise branches out this generation to make more cash by developing on both the 360 and PS3.

This type of development doesn’t work for the recent Iron Man game, or any Bratz games… The best games are specific to each platform. Drakes Fortune, Gears of War, GT5, FZ2, Crysis, WoW… shoot even older games! Mario or Crash Bandicoot ring a bell people?

Before you people start throwing names around like Call of Duty 4… keep in mind Infinity Ward did an excellent job keeping the PS3 and 360 version looking great without sacrificing things… but the PC version was shat on in the process. The PC version contains far less customization options for servers than the PS3 and 360 for starters, and dont get me started on the DLC maps that wont be coming until late this year… if at ALL!

Glad to know the geniuses over at Kojima Co. are strictly focusing on PS3 development for MGS4  Awhile back I thought that too would succumb to “Multiplatform Dog Poop Syndrome”.

I have the 360 version for the DLC and Xbox live, I wouldn’t care less which version only ran at 630/640p as long a they both looked the same but i seem to remember the Sony fanboys going to flame town when they found out that Halo 3 ran at that resolution so i guess it will at least shut up some of the dumb fanboys.

So once again 360 is the superior version. I guess the PS3 isnt so powerful after all. Not the first time sony lied about its hardware saying PS2 could do Toy Storty quality graphics.

For all the fanboys that say the 360 is the best console… hang on a second… let me pause my blu-ray… there we go… much better… the sound is so loud on these damn blu-ray movies… booya!!

And please it’s obvious what system runs it better. No popups on the PS3 too many on the 3ty!! And plus on the 360 u guys only have ONE view of the TV can even see it properly. U guys are a joke!!

Lol i don’t really care, i play GTA4 on the ps3 and it looks great, we have slightly better load times thanks to the install, we don’t have as many pop ups as you guys, i’m not a res whore so i don’t care about “zomgz 90 lines of extra definition”… tbh HD is something thats great when ya can have it, but i’m not gonna be gutted if it’s not there and go cut myself…

oh and the tv thing is , who cares if you can zoom in or not.
Do you guys realise that the time you’ve wasted here could have been spent actually playing GTA… as for me.. i’m in college! :P

On May 6, 2008 at 6:35 am

 this makes me feel good aswell all you ps3 fans going on about the 360s faulty hardware when in fact your hardware struggles to keep up with the 360 in GAMES and to the guy about gt5 looking better than pgr4 FYI pgr4 had 2 years of development and is almost as good looking as gt5 imagine pgr4 having gt5s dev time.

I heard there is a way around this and that it can be shown at full 720/1080p with some settings changing

segasaturn

On May 6, 2008 at 11:18 am

dude just because you change the setting to 720p or 1080p doesnt change what the game actually runs at. the ps3 runs at 630p…doesnt matter if you change the setting to 720p or 1080p all this does it upconverts to 720p or 1080p. however the 360 version runs at 720p natively and you can also upcovert on the 360 also.

thats just like saying upconverting dvd players run dvds which are 480p to 1080p. the movie is still 480p it just upconverts to 1080p, otherwise why buy a blu-ray player

YoYo

On May 6, 2008 at 11:20 am

The game looks and runs better on the PS3 so why are people saying this is good for the 360?

segasaturn

On May 6, 2008 at 11:25 am

matter of opinon, which system it looks better on… in my opinion, and i have both systems(my buddy brought the ps3 version over)… the 360 version looks by far better and clearer…. less blurry…this is running on my 1080p toshiba

im sure if they ran the 360 version at 630p there wouldnt be any pop-up, but you barely notice it anyway…just what ps3 fanboys wanna bring up

YoYo

On May 6, 2008 at 2:07 pm

segasaturn you are lying or you didnt set the game up properly. The PS3 version looks better. Even the guy ewho runs Rockstar agrees with that.

BTW the pop up is caused by not being able to load to the hard drive

Neter

On May 6, 2008 at 5:49 pm

I have seen some pop up going on my ps3 and could not ignor it.
If people in review metion this as one of the bad thing on the 360 I would happily trade that in for no DLC.
To me personal graphics being on my screen when I turn around quick or travel fast is far less irritating then missing 90 lines of resolution and unknown dlc.

This doesent make sense to me… Im running the game at 1080i… So, 1920×1080 interlaced. So doesent that mean… Both versions are capable of 1080???? The strange thing is is that the only way I was able to play it in 1080i is if I unchecked 720P. That way it just went straight to 1080i…So, ummm. wtf is the big deal. 640P if you can only play in 720P and 1080i or p depending on how awesome you are.

This is another proof that the Xbox360 is overall a more powerful gaming-console.
The fact that the Xbox360 has a 10mb ED ram chip on the GUP itself releaves much stress on the card as it handles AA, AF and so on. This uses 25-35% of the GPU power of the PS3 – hence the Bluriness (wich they often use to smoothe out the jagged lines instead of AA).

AS for the missing 90 (80) lines, this is another proof that the PS3 will probably have fps issues if not downscaling the games. Yes PS3 has a strong processor, but thats it – compared to the superior Xbox 360.

Buy a PS3 if you like exclusive PS3 games and Bluray movies. Buy Xbox360 if you want the strongest console with the best online system.

Rapture333

On May 6, 2008 at 6:40 pm

To the contrary…. The only reason the 360′s been doing so well and certain companys (Valve) who are used to making PC games are used to on the 360. Because, well the 360 is bascialy computer hardware. So it’s easy to program for the PC right? So it’s easy for 360. Thats why theirs so many 360>PC PC>360 ports. You remember a year ago when all the devs were complaining about the architecture of the PS3s hardware. You dont here that today (except from valve). And if you’ve seen the hardware evolution from say resistance to ratchet and clanq. It’s a big diference. Resistance 2 should be graphicaly superb. Just like Uncharted. To say the 360′s superior in hardware is overstated, It’s easy to developer for yes, but lately PS3 games have been beautiful. (PC’s still the best platform)

On May 6, 2008 at 7:57 pm

unless u guys get paid from m$ or sony u should chill, both versions look good, the ps3 version has a little softer affect and the 360 seems more rigid. i have a ps3 and my buddy has a 360 and the differences are minor at best. why do we argue for these companies anyway? if u want the game buy it either way if not dont

segasaturn

On May 7, 2008 at 4:57 am

pop-up is not caused by loading from the hard drive…. its caused by 3d graphical processing power and ram… ever played the saturn and played daytona usa and the mountain with sonic doesnt appear till you crash into it…saturn had massive pop-up and doesnt have a hard drive…. also the 360 doesnt use its hard drive for gaming….only for game saves hence the 360 arcade= no hard drive

Steve

On May 8, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Whatever way you try and spin this the PS3 has had the resolution cut back to reduce the workload, that may be because of PS3 hardware limitations or it may be that Rockstar are not completely comfortable with the architecture yet but either way with the console being on the market for some time now its not a good sign.

i have gta on ps3 and experience no blur to speak of. there is minimal pop in but much worse on 360. ps3′s hd keeps pop in to a minimum. the graphics are good but not uncharted good. the biggest difference between the two systems i could notice is the pop in thing. gta may be native 640 but upscaled to 1080 looks the same as 360′s. i dont know where this blurry issue came from, maybe someone with a bad tv. one nice aspect of ps3′s version is once through with the initial 5 minute install, there are no loading screens. only 198 more pigeons to go, lol.

do u believe that rockstar would like to change tha grafics from one console to the other! sony will complain or microsoft too! i don’t get it to ps3 vs xbox! it’s the same! the difference is between same kind of games, excusive to its console e.g. gran turismo vs forza motorsport!

@Stratos:

GTA IV doesn’t run on any console on 1080p, the output to your tv is upscaled to it’s native solution.
