Guild Wars 2 Devs Explain how to Keep Your Guild Wars 1 Name

In Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, character names are unique across the entire game, not just across a certain server, which means it will be all the more difficult to snatch up Aragorn or Tyrael when Guild Wars 2 releases. ArenaNet wants to ensure that long-time players of the original Guild Wars don’t lose their prized names, and has explained how you can keep yours.

There are currently 20 million two-word names in use by existing Guild Wars players, so ArenaNet couldn’t simply keep them all reserved. Instead, any player who has logged into GW at least once since January 2012 and creates a GW2 character with the same name during the Headstart Access period or on launch day will retain their name.

After launch day, the millions of unclaimed names will be freed up for new Guild Wars 2 players to use.

Sounds fair to me.
