Guild Wars 2: “Paid Tournaments and Custom Arenas Coming in the Near Future”

Guild Wars 2 has paid tournaments and custom arenas in its future — near future, in fact. Systems designer Jonathan Sharp discussed the future of the game’s Player vs. Player component in an official blog post, revealing that the first things players can expect are paid tournaments and custom arenas.

GW2 presently has free tournaments which reward the top four players with glory and rank points. Paid tournaments will offer greater rewards, including tournament tickets and even gems — which you need to enter a paid tournament.

Players will also be able to rent custom arenas, modify their parameters, and use them as private, password-protected training areas.

Sharp said:

“Paid tournaments and custom arenas will be coming online in the near future – paid tournaments will come first, followed by custom arenas. And when we’re done with those, we’ll start working on other features to add. Guild Wars 2 competitive PvP is taking its first steps, teams are starting to organize, and some key features are about to start showing up. But are we done working on it? Hell no. The way we see it, Guild Wars 2′s PvP may be shipped, but it’s far from finished.”

Will you make use of custom arenas and enter paid tournaments?
