5 million isnt a shabby number at all, especially considering what its up against and how little they spend on advertising.

Oh, Fileplanet has a couple of trials, one for subscribers letting you sample all 3 campaigns and one for free users that lets you sample Factions I think(or Prophecies, one of the two)

I've played GW since day 1 and I'll still play it a while from now, I do take a few weeks break now and again though, the lack of any real grind (it's optional if you want the good gear but un-need to progress) in order to reach the level cap, this is a good thing compared to WoW where it's basically a constant grind from level 1 all the way up.

I play with friends via Ventrilo and it makes playing it more fun than with a public group as you can actually communicate properly.

I keep hearing about how WoW is all about having the top tier gear and who can spam their macros fastest, Guild Wars only lets you have up to 8 skills at any one time, you can only swap skills in the towns and outposts, this promotes actual skill and thought, PvP is organised and uses even teams in an arena style environment, stopping the idiots from one faction camping around areas with lowbies and killing them.

The game actually has a full story fleshed out with cut-scenes and voice acting, not many MMOs have something like that.

And with it being free to play, it won't eat into your wallet if you enjoy it and play a lot, the only thing that costs money is the 3 campaigns and the expansion although there are a few optional upgrades they offer little to no advantage over others.

I'm pretty sure that if you head over to GuildWars.com you can get a trial of the game so you guys can try it out.

Hellgate isn't actually a terrible comparison in terms of structure, but GW is a far superior game in my opinion.

Jason, the main difference between Guild Wars and your average MMORPG is that GW is almost entirely made up of instances rather that a large persistent world. Towns and cities, however, get all the players together for party formation, trading, etc.

I play EverQuest on a regular basis. Is Guild Wars anything like it? If so, I would be interested in trying something new out. I know about WoW but what others do any of you recommend?

How in-depth is it? Would I like it if I liked Hellgate, Dungeon Siege, Baldur's Gate II or Morrowind?

Do players sophisticatedly use ingame chat or do they all n00b style:

"how can i get more gold or xp [system references are bad] so i can levels?"

I've had guild wars since a little while after it came out and I still play it regularly. People say Oh well the level cap is 20 that's no fun. Well the game isn't about leveling up. The game doesn't even get good until you hit 20. I have Prophecies, Nightfall, and Eye of the north and all are very good.

I was a big fan of Guild Wars for quite a while, so I'm glad to see it's continuing to do well. It definitely is an interesting model for an MMO-esque game, but in the end (after two years of playing) a lack of an auction house and any real persistence had me forking money over for WoW and LotRO.
