Half-Life 2 Mod, “Elevator: Source”, Has Perfectly Described Our Civilization
We often wonder how people will remember us when we’re gone. And by “we”, I mean “our civilization”, by “people”, I mean “future scientists” and by “remember” I mean “make sexed-up shows about us on Future HBO”. What we need is a clear record of what life in our time was all about. Something that really nails the frustrating combination of stress and tedium that defines life for nearly everyone. Enter “Elevator: Source”, a brilliant mod of Garry’s Mod (requires Half-Life 2:Episode 2) by Pixel Tail Games that literally puts the player in the middle of the action with an action-packed ride on an elevator that takes you between floors in a giant office building.
No, not kidding. Here’s the description from the official site:
Elevator: Source is a single or co-op elevator experience that is different each time you play. What floor will you stop on next? What will happen? Who knows! We don’t even know! And we made the game. It’s THAT EXCITING.
Elevator: Source brings you:
Up to 28 randomized floors to stop on (with DLC packs possible in the future!)
A thrilling co-op experience
Realistic elevator physics
Cunning, state of the art AI that REALLY GOES INTO THE ELEVATOR AND WAITS!
Real moral choices! What floor do you get off at? Do you ever get off? Only you are able to craft your elevator story.
No video game to date can bring you the quality of elevators or as realistic a simulation as Elevator: Source can!
But it gets better. They’ve provided access to the devkit so that players can design their own custom floors to access via lift. This might be the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. At least today, anyway. And best of all, it gives historians of the future a brutally honest look at how things work for us. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s a clip. A 45 minute clip. Of people riding virtual elevators.
