Half-Life 2 VR Head & Gun Tracking Mod Is Oculus Rift Ready (VID)

With the Oculus Rift VR headset on the horizon, third-party modders have been getting old, classic games ready for virtual reality. One such modder, Nathan Andrews, has developed an Oculus Rift-ready Half-Life 2 mod that adds full head tracking and weapon tracking to the game.

Andrews demonstrates his mod in action with gameplay footage alongside footage of himself in his VR gear — two hillcrest trackers, the same ones John Carmack used in his E3 and Quakecon demos of the early Rift prototype. His mod provides full 360 degree, 1-to-1 tracking on both the head and weapon, with no gimmicks or constraints between where you aim and your field of view.

If you’re wondering why Half-Life 2 looks better than you remember, that’s the work of FakeFactory’s Cinematic Mod, which causes no compatibility issues with the VR mod.

To try out this mod currently, you need to have an HMD and a hillcrest tracker or two; if that somehow applies to you, then here’s the link. As for the rest of us, we’re waiting for the Oculus.
