Half-Life Sven Co-op Mod to Get Standalone Steam Release
Valve has given its blessing to the creators of Sven Co-op to release a full fledged standalone version of their Half-Life mod on Steam, with full access to the GoldSrc engine that powers the game. To date, the mod has been in development for 15 years.
The big announcement was made on the Sven Co-op forums, alerting fans to the development. The developers state that they have been granted access by Valve to work on their own custom version of the Half-Life engine.
What this means is that the next version of Sven Co-op will run as a standalone game using a custom build of the Half-Life engine, and will be downloadable for free for all Steam users. The mod will include the full campaign of Half-Life with no requirement to own the original game.
The release will include automatic updates, new features and enhancements, including a series of updates to the Half-Life “Hammer” game editor. The team hopes to deliver a “larger, more detailed Half-Life world” as a result of these enhancements.
“We are grateful beyond expression to Valve for their generosity and efforts put forth to make this possible,” added the developer. “We’re looking forward to working with one of the greatest game engines ever made, and we can assure everyone that there are many, many more updates to come.”
More updates will be posted in the near future on the mod’s forums.
