This post has just gone up at Bungie.net:
This just in! The Microsoft team has identified the issue that was preventing the Halo 3 beta from being downloaded via Crackdown. This problem is expected to be fixed within the next 3 to 6 hours. New information as soon as we have it!
So, if you’re a Crackdown owner who’s waiting for the Halo 3 beta, this would be a good time to get some sleep. It sounds like you may be up all night. Tuck the kids in, call in sick to work, and frag the night away!

Blue segment of the load balancer for the authentication server crashed, as did the failover that is supposed to take it off-line. The entire cluster locked in a round robin of confusion while SE’s tried to find the cure. Each authentication segment is tied to a content server farm, so when authentication drops, so does the content server farm.
It’s running on only one segment out of 8 and will be slow until they figure out why the load balancers aren’t talking properly.
