Halo 4 Cover Revealed

Yesterday, because no other games were about to be released and thus they knew they had the PR field all to themselves, Microsoft released a series of 32 images as part of a ‘Halo 4 Puzzle’. It didn’t take long before fans decoded it, probably because there wasn’t anything else for them to be doing. And ta-daaa! The Puzzle’s solution turned out to be the box cover of Halo 4.

As you can see, the cover features Master Chief underneath a giant glowing starfish that I’m pretty sure isn’t an enemy ship of some kind. I kid of course. The Puzzle was solved by a concerted effort of fans on the Halo Waypoint forums. Good job guys.

Halo 4 launches on November 6. (Via Game Informer).

I’m surprised at how good a job this does at assuaging my fears about Halo 4 being “more of the same”. The Halo series is driven by its sense of revelation, exploration, and grand scale, and the reveal that we’re going to be fighting the Covenant again was kind of a disappointment since they’re so familiar. This art does a really good job of capturing the “Master Chief standing alone against all odds” vibe without making it feel like “well it’s just THOSE GUYS again, and I know I can beat them”; the Chief is on his knees and clearly in trouble, and that really entices me to find out what’s going to happen.
