Halo 4 Fincher-Directed Trailer Is About the Man Inside the Armor

Something that has me excited for the future of the Halo series is that the developers at 343 Industries are taking a different approach to their handling of the iconic Master Chief, and you can see some of that thinking in the launch trailer dropped for Halo 4.

This is the live-action trailer directed by David Fincher (Fight Club), with visual effects by Tim Miller (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) In it, we see the Chief’s human side. The Chief is a super-soldier and a hero, sure — but he’s more than just a suit of armor. He’s a guy. He was a kid once, pulled into the SPARTAN program as a child, augmented with surgical upgrades and therapies that killed many of the other SPARTAN candidates. He’s special, but he’s also a man, and 343 seems to be trying to focus in more on the character of that man than on all the cool crap he can do.

That’s a pretty exciting thing, if you ask me.

The Halo universe has some dense but intriguing story concepts flying around, so in addition to seeing how 343 takes up the mantel of Halo’s gameplay and multiplayer aspects, I’m interested to see how it deals with the story.

I like how they have acknowledged that Chief has a face and a past, and am really hoping that the four or so remaining spartans will eventually show up in the series.
