In the Halo series, the skulls have become a staple — part easter egg, and part collectible, these little trinkets are well worth discovering for long Halo die-hard, and they’re back in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Providing a series of effects, sometimes making the game easier, but mostly making the game harder, they’re the ultimate trophy for those that have finished Halo ten times on legendary already. Just knowing where these skulls are is the beginning, getting to some of them will take time, practice, and teamwork. Get to work, Master Chief, you’re going to be busy.

If you’re looking to experience Halo Anniversary without all the headaches, check out our walkthrough. For more extra content like this, drop by the cheats page.

Skull Location Guide

Iron

  • Effect: After dying, restarts the entire level, or on co-op, restarts to the previous checkpoint.
  • Found during The Pillar of Autumn. Just as you’re given control, turn right and enter the back of the room. Search for two crates near one of the walls, you’ll find the skull behind these two crates.

Mythic

  • Effect: All enemy health is doubled, while enemy sentinel bots have double shields.
  • Found during Halo, just as you step out of the wrecked pod, turn right and walk towards the waterfall. The skull is behind the waterfall, behind a rock near the cliff-face.

BOOM

  • Effect: All explosions have their blast radius doubled.
  • Found during Halo, when the warthog is dropped off, jump in and drive it towards the first large tunnel leading underground. Instead of driving down into the tunnel, jump out and follow the cliff edge on the right. You’ll find the skull in the grass above the tunnel.

Foreign

  • Effect: Cannot pick up alien weapons, but can drive alien vehicles.
  • On the alien ship during Truth & Reconciliation, wait until you reach the area where you face off against hunters for the third time. The skull is through the door they enter the hangar from.
  • The room is a large hangar bar where marines are dropped off to help you. Fight and kill every alien until music begins to chime. You need to wait on the far right-side of the room so that you can rush through the doors just as they open.

Famine

  • Effect: All weapons have only half their regular magazine size.
  • Find this skull on Silent Cartographer. Just as you land, turn around and walk away from the fighter and your checkpoint. Continue circling the island until you reach a ramp leading up to the top of a flat piece of land right in the middle. Run up the ramp to find a skull at the top.

Bandanna

  • Effect: Infinite ammo for all weapons.
  • Enter the security building during Silent Cartographer and down the path that leads to the security console. Leave the room through the doorway left of the console, and once outside, look left again.
  • You should be able to see an infinite drop, but also the outer part of the hallway you used to get into the console room. You’ll need to grenade jump to reach the top of the outer hallway.
  • If grenade jumping is too tricky here, try rocket jumping.

Fog

  • Effect: Disables all radar.
  • Found during Assault on the Control Room. The skull is on a raised platform. Find the room after crossing your first bridge and riding an elevator down to the ground floor. You’ll know which platform is the right one if there’s a tube shooting steam directly beneath.
  • This is a very tricky skull to reach. Find a small raised edge to throw the grenade onto before attempting to grenade jump so that you can jump high enough to reach the higher area.

Malfunction

  • Effect: Randomly disables one player’s HUD.
  • Found during Assault on the Control Room, when you enter the massive underground room through the tunnels, you’ll see pipes in the center sticking out of both sides of the gorge. The skull is on your side of the gorge from where you enter, and almost just ahead on one of these pipes, left of the broken bridge.

Recession

  • Effect: Every shot fired uses 2 rounds in a magazeine instead of just 1.
  • Found during 343 Guilty Spark, as you cross a fallen tree and see one of the alien turrets explode while enemies open fire from a structure ahead, you’ll know you’re in the right place. Don’t go inside just yet, instead run to the left wall and hug it until you reach a turret with a small drop behind it. Carefully jump down to find a skull at the bottom.

Black Eye

  • Effect: Shields only recharge when using melee attacks on an enemy.
  • On the first floor of The Library, before entering the large, yellow, circular Index Chamber, look for a yellow vent in the ceiling closest to the Index Chamber door. Grenade jump into the vent to find the skull.

Eye Patch

  • Effect: No auto-aim.
  • During The Library, before you take the Index, circle around and seach the far back of the room behind the Index. The skull is on the ground far behind the Index.

Pinata

  • Effect: Melee attacks on enemies make them drop grenades.
  • Found during Two Betrayals, the skull is on a ledge directly above the underground tunnel exit. You’ll have to reach the end of the level, take a Banshee, and fly it all the way back to this point to get up there and find the skull.

Grunt Birthday Party

  • Effect: Headshots make grunts explode into confetti.
  • Found during The Maw, during your big escape in the warthog. When Cortana tells you to stop on a platform, and you see the Foehammer shot down, that’s where you want to look. The skull is on a railing to your right as you enter. Use the Warthog to back up against the railing, then jump ontop of the ‘hog to get high enough to grab the skull.

LOL wow, on teh day it came out, somehow someone zoomed through all missions on easy and searched for all skulls? i hope that person did it for their job, otherwise they have a sad sad life :(

Pinata skull is durring your third ride in banshee. And GBP you’re riding in a warthog. Not a car:)

Blake

On November 17, 2011 at 7:58 am

Yeh, on the day it came out. Y’know David, regardless of this person having a life or not, we should appreciate that they took the time to post this for our sake. Us being the gaming populous that is to lazy to find all these ourselves.

DemonoidMaster

On November 17, 2011 at 2:20 pm

As for the Foreign Skull, it’s the second set of Hunters, not the third… the third set gets squashed by the Dropship when Keyes drives you off the Covenant ship

PS: you can just run towards the door … an elite and grunts will pop out way before those Hunters arrive. (but be quick, because that door will lock when they aren’t close to it anymore)

DemonoidMaster

On November 17, 2011 at 2:23 pm

Also, another error…
First set of Hunters is outside the ship.. before you use the gravity lift
Second set of Hunters is where that door is, and that skull

So in terms of fixind your massive up, you find the skull throught that door were you face the first and only set of hunters.

David, it says “GameFront Staff” at the top. So, it was his job.

Blake

On November 17, 2011 at 5:34 pm

@ DemanoidMaster
1st set of hunters is outside of the ship,
2nd set is inside the ship after you go up the grav lift and after fighting off invisible elites, they only appear on Heroic or Legendary.
So he was right when he said it was behind the door of the 3rd set of hunters.

Did a speed run on easy and found them all…boom shackalocka!

Demonoid: You’re wrong.

First set is at the grav lift.

Second set is in the first room, the one where the grav lift takes you; after you kill everything else, they emerge from the corridor that leads to the doors the marines can’t open. Unless you play on Easy; don’t know about Normal, but they definitely show up on Heroic and Legendary.

Third set is in the hangar bay, as described.

Play more Halo.

Sorry, I was looking at a cached version of this page, didn’t see that Blake beat me to it.

By the way, there’s an easier way to get Bandana, if you have a friend or a second controller:

Well the person who figured the locations of the skulls probably just hacked the disk to retrieve the information. This way would make the process of finding all the skulls and writing up a guide for them in just a few hours at most.

Just to let everybody know, 343 (and Bungie used to) posts the skull locations on HBO about a day or so after the game comes out so it won’t take months for someone to post the skull locations for other people.

Some you are idiots it’s the 3rd pair of hunters.
1st- dropped from the ship.
2nd- the cargo area of the ship when you enter.
3rd- the room where keys acquires the ship, but this is before you find keys.
4th- gets hit by the spirit keys is driving, splatter kill.

On November 22, 2011 at 5:13 pm

is a difficulty required for skulls too show up?

PCachu

On November 22, 2011 at 10:30 pm

The only requirement for skulls to appear is that you have to be using Shiny New Graphics mode instead of Old School mode. Any difficulty setting will do — which is only fair, since the difficulty affects the enemies’ strength and behavior, not your ability to do platforming tricks.

@ everyone who said there wasn’t a third set of hunters in “The Truth and Reconciliation: Being that you have said that it is the the second set of hunters you are wrong… There are indeed three sets of hunters in that mission that you fight, if you don’t know that then YOU need to play halo more not the guy who submitted the info. and obviously you don’t have the BALLS to play on heroic or legendary where they appear…

On November 24, 2011 at 8:20 am

When you put “When Cortana tells you to stop on a platform, and you see the Foehammer shot down… Its not “the Forehammer” its just Forehammer. you don’t say “the Cortana” or “the Sargent Johnson” do you? But I thank you for taking time out of your day to give us the skull locations.
P.S.
I am having trouble getting the Bandanna Skull, I always inches away from the platform. :)

In awe of stupidity

On November 25, 2011 at 7:07 am

Wow people, it seems as if some or most of you need to set down halo, sit down yourself, and open a grammer book. Learn your to, too, & two’s as well as learn that sargent is a name brand/company and sergeant is a military rank. You probably think a Colonel is written as kernal. So before you chastise people for not playing Halo enough, try setting the controller down and learn some real life knowedge. Maybe then, you wont come off as an illiterate dork

Another way to get the bandana skull is to drive the warthog into the structure. Stand on top of the gunner and place plasma grenade on the drivers seat.

Not so hard after all!

On November 26, 2011 at 8:38 am

I suck at the grenade jump, so I got the rocket launcher and did a backwards rocket jump.
Just run backwards, jump at the edge and fire rocket at the edge of the platform.
You do need an over shield for this to work. Only took 2 attempts!

Not so hard after all!

By the way, I’m referring to the banddana skull.

Before “correcting” them next time, stop skipping school to play Halo and attend your math class that, judging by your apparent inability to count, you are currently failing.
@In Awe of Stupidity
Fail. Just…. fail. You might as well have just punched yourself in the face.
@GameFront Staff
Thank you for posting this information for the devoted gamers who also maintain 2 full-time jobs and attend college, making them short on time with which to look for these themselves.

there is no yellow vent in the seiling on the first floor of the library befor you enter the yellow index chamber will some one specify what this guy is talking about its the only skull i have not found.

roz 117

On December 14, 2011 at 11:18 am

the skull is behind you as you look towards the doorway to go into the index room itsd the one on the right, its right up the vent so u cant see it, in the black bits

HorusVII

On December 23, 2011 at 8:33 am

to roz 117 and daledoe, it took me almost an hour to finally give up and look it up on you tube, it’s the right vent furthest from where you start the level before entering the index chamber, you have to jump on the pillar in front of it (with a grenade) and then jump into the vent, oh and those of you correcting people, do it nicely or don’t even mention it at all, please and thank you. gamefront, thank you.

Sephtyan

On December 30, 2011 at 11:27 pm

I’d try and advise future posters to not correct past & future-past posters, as it will only make yourself look like an egotistical know-it-all, and the proof of which is this post in and of itself. On a related topic, I have horrible timing, and as such could never time the grenade jump correctly. I know that the closer you are to the grenade at the time of detonation; the more lift you will get out of it. The trick is that you need to have jumped before detonation, otherwise you’ll “stick” to the floor, achieving a max of about 3 inches. In other words: You press A before the grenade explodes, but the closer you can get to the actual mark of explosion, the more height you get.
Side note; be wary of placing the grenade to far to the right/jumping from too far to the right, as you can easily get caught by the door jamb and get launched out left instead.

On January 5, 2012 at 7:01 pm

Wow. First I would like to thank Game Front for supplying this info because, well with school and work, theres no way in hell I would have found these skulls as fast as I have. As for everybody bickering amongst each other, just shut the hell up! Seriously,343 was kind enough (yes I know their making money off of it) to bring us this freaking amazing game back to life with all the graphics, sounds, skulls and the like.. and everybody is ing to each other about spelling???? Save it for the fu*k#ing field online boys. Really, I don’t know who all here is a Halo vet but by the sounds of it, most (not all) are not. I know this, because I couldn’t see a bunch of Halo vets ing about spelling and how many hunters there are on a certain level. Just so people are clear there are four on the heroic difficulty setting and up, including the pair that Captain Keyes rails with the drop ship, just to shut that argument up. As for people posting that gamers need to get a life, sorry that doesn’t make sense, I consider myself a Halo vet, beat them all, on all difficulties about a thousand times each and I still find plenty of time to play other games, go to work, attend my studies, spend time with my girlfriend and get laid so I would say I’ve got a life, pretty good one actually. But enough of that, stop ing and just enjoy what is probably one of the single greatest games ever made (along with Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time in my view). Peace, see you in the dirt.

@ Red X -Very well said, my good sir. I couldn’t have put it better myself.
Game Front thank you for taking the time out of your day, to post all the skull locations.
Everyone else, why all the hostility? There is no need for us as halo fans to be malicious towards each other. We all came to site with the same agenda, finding the locations of the skulls. We are all Halo fans, let’s just enjoy the game that defined FPS, the game that united gamers the world around. The only game that I would squeeze myself into a cramped basement with 10 other people, with 5 TV’s running, wires running everywhere, the smell of BO & ass lingering, & playing from dusk to dawn.
Halo FTW!!

It’s possible to get Pinata without the Banshee. It’s not exactly practical, but if you’re good at grenade jumping and want to save a couple minutes so that you don’t have to finish up the level, I advise doing that. It is possible as i’ve just grenade jumped up there (do it on the cliffs on the right side of where you exit the tunnels, left side if you’re looking straight at the tunnels).
