Hawken Looking to Be Bigger Than League of Legends; Raises $18M

Mark Long, CEO of Hawken publisher Meteor Entertainment, believes his upcoming sci-fi mech FPS will be bigger than League of Legends. To ensure Hawken’s launch is explosive, Long and his team have raised $18 million in funding from the likes of Rustic Canyon Partners, Benchmark Capital and FirstMark Capital — those last two investors were backers of League of Legends.

When asked whether he thinks Hakwen can be bigger than League of Legends, Long said, “That’s the plan.”

While I do wish Hawken the best, and the sci-fi mech genre is to my liking, Hawken just seems so much more niche than League of Legends, or World of Warcraft for that matter, and I can’t see it reaching as wide an audience as those two titans. But then again, some may have said the MOBA genre was niche, yet that hasn’t stopped LoL from steamrolling through the gaming industry.
