Heavy Rain Film Rights Purchased, Film May Be Made Someday
So Heavy Rain has sold pretty well since it came out in February, over a million off the shelves, apparently. And today the film rights for the game were auctioned off, and Deadline reported earlier that it looked like the winners would be Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, former big daddies at New Line and current big daddies at the production house Unique Features, which they founded two years ago.
This doesn’t necessarily mean a Heavy Rain movie is imminent or ever coming. Shaye and Lynne have collected a pile of projects for Unique, so unless they get some legitimate financial backing or Bob Shaye decides that this will be his new passion project*, they likely made the purchase as a bank on Heavy Rain becoming a big franchise.
*The last Bob Shaye passion project was The Last Mimzy, among the most baffling and inaccessible mainstream movies I’ve seen.
