Heavy Rain Was Expected to Sell Pretty Meh

Quantic Dream head David Cage talked at Gamescom yesterday, and he revealed something interesting. He said Sony’s feelings about his PS3-exclusive title Heavy Rain before release were something like this: “You’ve got this strange game from France. It’s gonna review ok and sell a few copies.” And then it got pretty stellar reviews and sold a million-and-a-half copies.

Not sure I completely buy this. I am sure, of course, that’s what Sony said early in the development cycle, but there was significant buzz about the title for years before release, and Sony ended up promoting the hell out of it online and on TV, and you don’t do that if you actually believe the sentiment expressed above. Hell, they even released a Heavy Rain console bundle in Europe.

It was still a risk going in, of course, because the game certainly is different than everything else we play (it’s all about story and quick-time events!), and so I’m happy that it’s done so well even though I don’t really think it’s a good game. Yeah, I said it. Good try, though!
