Here’s What You Get from Playstation Plus in Japan Right Now

pspIt looks like the Japanese version of Playstation Plus is drastically different from what NA and EU are getting. The folks across that large body of water to my right (I’m facing south at the moment) will get three games each month that they can play for that month after which they’ll have to buy it to keep going, and you’ll also get one free game to keep for the duration of your sub, like the rest of us. Also like the rest of us, you get free themes and PSN ID avatars and stuff. After the jump is exactly what you get for your subscription.

The game you’ll get to download and keep while your sub is active is LittleBigPlanet. The three titles you’ll get to play for 30 days are Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds, PAIN and Echochrome. There are also three discounted titles, all of which are half price: Wipeout HD for 900 yen, Star Strike HD (aka Super Stardust HD) for 400 yen and a PSOne Classic I’m not familiar with called ???????? (I guess WordPress isn’t fond of hiragana. Just click the link in the next sentence.) for 300 yen. There are also five PSN ID avatars you can download. The full deets are here.

That deal is so different from what the other regions are getting that I don’t really know how to judge its value. I think the North American Store will end up coming out the winner in all of this if you judge it buy the whole package, but if you’re looking only at the free stuff, then Europe probably wins. Japan probably loses either way since you can’t keep most of the free games past the month in which they’re offered.

It sounds like this may be the future of console gaming – where games are downloaded for a subscription period instead of people having to go and purchase the game.

Living in Japan and just tried the Playstation Plus. Pain is limited to 60 minutes of play time, and Everybody’s Gold is limited to 15 minutes. Had I known that I probably wouldn’t have bought the subscription.

On the plus side though Japan people can buy the monthly pass which only costs 500 yen ($5 dollars).
