Hitman Absolution to Include Stealth Gameplay, Despite Action-Heavy Trailers

Diehard Hitman fans have expressed concerns after seeing the action-heavy videos for Hitman Absolution, but apparently, there is no need to panic — the stealth aspects simply didn’t make for interesting video footage.

IO producer Luke Valentine told Eurogamer:

“It’s true, the trailers do look more action focused. The thing is, what do you do when you’re marketing a video game? How do you make a trailer of stealth? How do you make a trailer of Hitman observing AI patterns or sitting in cover for a minute? No-one would watch it.”

Valentine went on to explain that trailers for past-games were also action-heavy:

“The funny thing is, if you go back and look at trailers for Blood Money, Hitman 2 and Contracts, they’re super action focused and they’re not at representative of the games. These games weren’t action games at all. But the way you need to market, to get attention, is to show something that looks exciting.

“Sitting and watching someone, although as an experience it’s exciting because you’re tense and you’re nervous as hell about messing up, it’s not an exciting way to show stuff. The comments are valid. But the people who worry it’s an action game just need to look back on the previous trailers and see the marketing was the same, actually.”

This does sound somewhat like an admission of false advertising, but I do applaud Valentine for his honesty. This is a pervasive issue in the trailer-making game, for both movies and video games — action sequences are overrepresented in an effort to retain viewer attention. However, the viewer is also given a false impression of the overall product.

What he says makes perfect sense to me.

But I’m still raged over the replacement of David Bateson as 47′s voice. Very much so. In fact, I can’t contain myself.

Of course I’d rather see a trailer that’s more representative of a game’s content. It’ll never happen because I’m not part of the demographic to which these games are marketed, but the more representative the information that I have, the more informed my choice.

And that’s why we’ll never see ads like that.
