Hmm. EVE Online ‘Greatly Influenced’ Planetside 2
Here’s something I don’t think I expected to learn. Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley apparently took a fair amount of inspiration from hours of EVE Online for the Planetside sequel. I know! Totally shocking in the same was it’s a shock to learn that The Spice Girls make a lot of money every time they reunite.
“My Eve experiences have been some of the most amazing of my gaming life,” Smedley told The Mittani. “I am a true PVP’er at heart and I’m not a big fan of rules. EVE provides the perfect environment for a person like me.” What this means is that, in his words, EO “had a huge impact on Planetside 2″.
Among the specific influences, he listed the ability to gain cert points offline, as well as Planetside 2′s resource system. Granted, not everything is roses and kisses. Smedley is not a fan of EVE’s gameplay. “I tried 6 times to get into Eve,” he said, noting that the 7th time finally hooked him. “I credit Eve University with that. As soon as I got in there things just clicked.” But, he added, “the most problematic aspect of Eve Gameplay at the moment – honestly I’d have a hard time pinning it down. 6 months ago I would have said the newbie experience but they are working hard to improve it.”
However, he made his feelings clear. “I like to give credit where credit is due and it’s fair to say that Eve greatly influenced my thinking as an online gamer and as someone running an online gaming company.”
It’s too bad he didn’t say he was influenced by Evony Online, because I’d love to see Planetside 2′s most identifiable trait being creepy, sexual non sequitur-based advertising, amirite people? BAZINGA!
