Homefront Will Use THQ’s Online Pass

Prepare for another wave of used games debate: THQ has confirmed that their upcoming shooter Homefront will use their Online Pass functionality. That’s right; if you buy the game used, be prepared to cough up and additional $10 for full access to multiplayer.

On the plus side, THQ is allowing gamers to access all multiplayer maps for as long as they like without purchasing the Online Pass. The only downside is that you won’t be able to progress past level 5 (out of 75) without shelling out the $10.

This is a bit of a variation on the theme of “discouraging used sales,” and it’s one that may actually bear more fruit. Allowing gamers to try the multiplayer before they buy it (assuming it’s worth buying) could be the way to make these fees a bit more palatable. It’s also nice to see that it’s not a time limited option.

Homefront will land on PC, PlayStation 3, and XBox 360 on March 8, 2011.
