How To Not F–k Up the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 PC Launch

Activision is about to loose Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 upon the world. Undoubtedly it will be huge on every platform. But of late, one platform above all others has seemed like a steaming pile of cow dung inconveniently placed beside a delicious picnic — the PC. For some reason, the last few months have seen some of the most godawful PC launches possibly ever. Certainly since last year.

Now, we don’t want to call out anybody in particular, because I’m sure the people who worked on RAGE and Battlefield 3 are nice folks. We’ve just collected a few Post-It-style notes for the folks over at Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer and Activision based on some … missteps of their fellow AAA game developers of late. We don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, so hopefully these slightly passive-aggressive notes will help the MW3 crew avoid some of the pitfalls of recent horrific PC launches.

Maybe You Should See If the Drivers Work?

I know, I know — those crazy bastards at nVidia/AMD/whoever are constantly pushing new software for those weirdo “video card” things. How can a game developer making a game for a PC possibly be expected to keep up with them or put them through quality assurance testing before the launch of their game? I mean, we have arbitrary street dates to hit, people! We can’t be expected to make sure our game works on both major video card manufacturers’ hardware. Do we look like we’re made of money and video cards and mouse-clicking fingers and eyeballs?

Obviously, some people like id Software and DICE can’t spare the time or the money to test out video cards and driver updates, but Activision has two studios working on Modern Warfare 3. Hopefully they can find an intern to sit down and try installing some things to make sure textures don’t just disappear and frame rates don’t nosedive whenever two players occupy the same room. We know it’s a tall order, but we think Activision can afford a little QA, even if EA and Bethesda couldn’t.
