id Software to Focus on Sequels for the Next 10 Years

I think there’s general agreement among the FileFront staff that Rage looks awesome, and that it’s nice to see id Software creating something new that isn’t just an engine. If you share that attitude with us, I’ve got some bad news for you.

Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine (via CVG), John Carmack of id said that the studio is unlikely to create a new IP in the next ten years. Instead, they’ll focus on supporting the properties they already own, like Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, and if it does well enough, Rage.

“We do already have more IPs than we can exploit. I doubt we’re going to do another IP. It’s scary to say it, but maybe not in the next decade even, because we want to support Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake – and hopefully we can add Rage onto that – and I don’t want five teams here. Three is scary enough.”

While I’m a little sad to hear this, it’s not like id has been cranking out new content in the past ten years. Besides, if the next IP they do make (whenever that may be) looks as cool as Rage, it may well be worth the wait.
