Idiot Pays $1,725 for Early Modern Warfare 3 Copy on eBay

UPDATE: If you have a legit MW3 copy, Robert Bowling says you won’t get banned. Stephen Toulouse tweeted this earlier, reversing his original you’ll-get-banned statement: “hey gang, as @fourzerotwo mentioned today on @gamespot, no plans to ban legit MW3 copies, but wait til Tuesday to play with everybody.”

UPDATE(?): MCV’s screenshot of the winning bid (embedded below) shows the estimated delivery time as “3-4 business days,” which paints this whole thing in a different, sadder light. That would mean the $1,725 copy of MW3 could quite possibly arrive on or after 11/08/11, the game’s official launch. But tell us if that’s wrong. We hope that’s wrong. Imagine spending that much and getting the game after everyone else who paid $60…

I’d spend a little more for an early copy of a game I really wanted. Wouldn’t you?

Skyrim, for example–I could see myself dropping, oh I don’t know, maybe $100 for an early leaked copy. It would be impulsive, I’d probably regret it, but for a few good days there I’d be in love with the decision.

Let’s kick it up a notch: how about $1,725 for an early copy of Modern Warfare 3, a mere 78 hours ahead of the game’s official launch? Think it over for a moment.

You wouldn’t? I wouldn’t either. That’s good. It means you and I are pretty sane people, with decent senses of value and a respect for money.

But this happened yesterday. Someone bought a leaked copy of MW3 on eBay yesterday for that insane price, after 88 bids. This whole thing started earlier this week when a Kmart in Tampa, Florida accidentally broke the street date and put the game on shelves early. Some industrious Floridians snatched up a bunch of copies and put them up on eBay, which is exactly what you or I or any sane person would do–to prey on the insane people who would pay this.

If you consider each hour between now and the launch as an individual unit of value (because that’s the only reason to pay for an early copy–you’re getting it before you’re supposed to, before everyone else), that $1,725 comes out to $22 per hour he paid.

I haven’t even gotten to the #1 reason this was so ridiculous. Activision says if you somehow obtained an early copy of MW3 (even legally), and you play it, you’ll get banned from Xbox Live.

Enjoy your $1,725 single-player Call of Duty campaign, man.

Am I wrong here? Would you guys pay this?

Well ofcourse you could only play single player campaign because you would be the only person on Earth who would have the early copy so no one else would be on Xbox Live. Well in this case the Florida store sold many early copys so you would have atleast a couple people who you could possibly play with IF no ban was involved.

The game’s street price is outrageous enough.

@Edgar you’d be surprised how many people are able to obtain early copies of AAA games, through various means. Sometimes they’re pirated from sites like piratebay (and played on modded Xbox 360s), sometimes they’re leaked from retailers like this situation, and sometimes people get early copies for press coverage reasons.

Of course you won’t have the same volume of players as you would post-launch, but it happens.

If you watched the Gamespot live streaming video today. RB said they were not in the business of going after people that bought the game legally. Either do your homework better or stop sensationalizing your stories.

I honestly think that Activision released the early copies intentionally for the publicity, and this guy is exactly the type of idiot that is getting them what they’d hoped for. Personally I think the whole franchise is owned by Scrooge McDuck and is a scam. It’s more of the same in a new shiny package. (Please note that I was a huge fan up to COD4 but recognized the pattern starting with MW2) On the other hand, while BF3 is an amazing game, I think that EA made some horrid horrid decisions on how to release it and how they treat their customers. Origin, etc…

@SR Earlier today Stephen Toulouse tweeted that he’d checked with Activision, and that even legit MW3 copies could get banned. It’s linked in the post above.

But Robert Bowling reversed that on GameSpot, like you mentioned. And now Toulouse re-tweeted and reversed his original statement.

The post has been updated, good catch.

I suppose you didnt see te screen shot of the winning bid, because if you had, you would have noticed that he bought it a few days before it comes out, but also he had to wait 3-4 BUSINESS days for the shipping…the idiot payed $1725 for a game that he will get LATER then everyone else

@SR

RB does not speak on behalf of Xbox Live. Just because you wont get banned from Activision doesn’t mean XBL won’t.

@derka

Microsoft don’t care. It’s up to Activision.

I think its an employee of EA’s marketing department. Nobody in the world is that stupid to pay that much for 78hours advance play of SP. This is marketing to create buzz.
