id’s Creative Director in Favor of Always-On DRM

id creative director Tim Willits is in favor of always-on DRM, and he made his case to Eurogamer by citing the positives that come with such a horrible, draconian anti-piracy measure.

In the end, it’s better for everybody. Imagine picking up a game and it’s automatically updated. Or there’s something new you didn’t know about, and you didn’t have to click away. It’s all automatically there.


He thinks it’s good, then, that Diablo III is going that route, because it could cause other titles to follow suit.

Diablo 3 will make everyone else accept the fact you have to be connected. If you have a juggernaut, you can make change. I’m all for that. If we could force people to always be connected when you play the game, and then have that be acceptable, awesome.

I’m really sort of horrified by this whole exchange. I’m guess Willits doesn’t have Comcast.

I don’t see myself having internet access in the distant future so its bad business for me, I guess I’ll have to start supporting the hackers that make no cd files or what ever if this ever go’s main stream.

When was it cool to alienate people that don’t the internet?

Maxrob, I hate to say this, but it’s not that uncommon to see cracks for “always-on” stuff. I mean, I’ve had to use them in the past to play Spliter Cell: Conviction and the like (due to shoddy network code that required me to use Tunngle to even connect to a multiplayer game).

It’s a showcase of how bad this always-on stuff can be if legitimate users wind up finding cracks for the game because otherwise they can’t play it, even over a LAN with their buddies.

I’ve used Always-On DRM cracks by the bucket loads. As Kyle mentioned, my Conviction is also cracked. I own it, but it’s cracked nonetheless. It runs better with one than without.

I think the only Always-On game that hasn’t been cracked thus far is HAWX 2, and that was because it was a downright horrible game. It really serves them no benefit except content control, which is really what Blizzard’s goal is. They want all legit players faced with the real money auction house and the ability to tempt people with cash only items. Like that pixie horse in WoW. Anything else they claim is just a smokescreen.

Bottom line, if crackers want to do it, it’ll get cracked. There’s no reason to punish your buyers with DRM garbage, and the more difficult it is for legit buyers to deal with your software, the more likely they will become pirate’s of that software.

If we force people to do drugs and have that be acceptable, awesome!!!

I wont be paying for a game that will need to use a pirate crack to be able to work. I had it with assassins creed 2, never again.

If I can’t play the game while on the move (such as on the train) then I won’t buy it or any of its sequels. It’s because of this I’ve never played any of the Assassin’s Creed games.

Games developers and publishers need to realize that DRM does nothing to stop piracy and turns off people who would otherwise purchase the game.
