Indie Ingenuity: Terraria 2 is Happening
The Terraria 1.2 update was an unexpected gift from indie dev Andrew Spinks to fans. Turns out he has much more in store for his crafting, construction, and combat gem. Terraria 2, a full-blow sequel, is now in the works.
Back in 2012, Spinks announced, “We’ve decided to move on.” No further Terraria updates were planned. But as Spinks told Rock Paper Shotgun today, that plan changed when fans begged for more. So Terraria 1.2 became a thing, and it got Spinks thinking about the possibilities. Many of those ideas didn’t fit within the framework of Terraria, so he decided to make a sequel.
“I’m super excited about starting Terraria 2,” Spinks told RPS. “It’s a ways out, but it’s gonna have a lot in common with the original. It’s gonna be quite different as well. I really want to expand on the whole Terraria universe.”
“There’s a lot of stuff I’m locked into with Terraria. The way loot works, the way character progression works. In Terraria 2, I really want to have infinite worlds so you’re not just stuck to one world. You can travel anywhere. I want more biome diversity in that, too.”
Don’t worry, Terraria 1 loyalists, Spinks said he has more stuff planned for the original, including a Halloween-themed update, an endgame progression that should be wrapped up in the next few months, and more. As development ramps up on Terraria 2, Spinks said he plans to accomplish all that work by bringing on an additional small dev team to focus on the original.
So more updates for Terraria, and a sequel featuring multiple worlds. If you’re a Terraria fan (hand raised) you’re one happy camper this morning.
