Indie Success Story: Starbound Tops 1 Million Copies Sold

Starbound is a sci-fi Terraria on steroids.

It was released on December 4 and it’s still in early access beta, but more than 1 million people have already shelled out $15 to play it. Because hey, who doesn’t want a sci-fi Terraria on steroids?

The sales announcement was made by developer Chucklefish via Twitter:

Starbound can do no wrong, it seems. Chucklefish raised more than $1 million in crowdfunding-style pre-orders in 2012 to help ramp up development, and to date, 187,692 backers have contributed more than $5.1 million.

Those numbers alone are enough to make an indie studio cry tears of joy, but that was just the tip of the pixelated iceberg. More than 812,000 others have decided to jump into the Starbound early access on Steam, and the sandbox RPG was also named the top indie of 2013 by IndieDB readers.

Congrats to Chucklefish! Mark this one down as the early frontrunner for the Feel Good Gaming Success Story of 2014 award.
