Infinity Ward is Sick of WWII Shooters Too

infinitywardlogo1.jpgAre you sick of the tired “World War II shooter” genre that seems to have infested the gaming market for almost a decade? Well, you’re not the only one. Infinity Ward recently talked about the creation of Call of Duty 4 and revealed that they’re just as sick of the genre as everyone else:

Call of Duty 4 was Infinity Ward’s third Call of Duty game, and as such we approached it knowing we needed to do something fresh. We don’t want to pigeonhole ourselves any more than we have to, and many members of the team came off Call of Duty 2 promising never to work on another WWII game…

Coming off Call of Duty 2, we knew we wanted to do something different for our next game. We don’t agree with some critics who say that WWII as a genre is dead, but we couldn’t muster the same passion for the subject that we had in our first three WWII games (Call of Duty 1 and 2 and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault).

Unfortunately, Treyarch doesn’t seem to feel the same way since they’re already planning to take the series back to 1940′s Europe with CoD5. Couldn’t we at least find another war to milk for crappy games? Where are the World War I shooters, at least?

Considering the fact that most WWII games are my favorite “shooter” genres, one would think that I would not grow too tired of them, but I have to agree. I am pretty sick of WWII as well, and while I loved two out of the three CoD games during WWII, CoD 4 was so much better. While I also loved the Wolfenstein games and few of the Medal of Honor titles, it is just getting old. There is always WWI, Korea, Vietnam (which is almost being done to death)and just plain old skirmishes that we could be playing games of instead. Granted, anything taking place in the Middle East would be too controversial at this time, but something other than WWII would be a breath of fresh air. Gamers have had their fill of this era in history and the less than stellar sales of WWII games of late proves it.

Give us war, just not WWII.

The real shame is how badly the Korean war gets ignored, in almost all media including games. How awesome could a Korean War game be? Go to Wikipedia and do some research. The breakout from the southern coast, the landing at Inchon, the Chinese invasion… There are a TON of things that would be absolutely killer in a game. Its a damn shame that a setting this cool gets totally ignored by the game makers.

i wouldnt say im sick of WWII shooters, or that they’re dead, but it is safe to say that they soon will be.

maybe we should be happy with the ones we have been and leave WWII to rest before we get so fed up with it we kill it off completely

Damn I heard that CoD5 was going to be in the Pacific but I guess it’s gonna be against the Japanese and not in Korea/Vietnam.

Oh WWII

I have vowed to never purchase another WWII game ever again. I loved the old Call of Duty’s, and Brothers in Arms, but every WWII game is just the same stuff over and over again. Shooting Nazi’s, blowing up AA guns, taking out tanks, using the same weapons and its nothing new. Although I would consider buying another Wolfenstein game if they did a new one. At least Wolfenstein comes up with something new for the WWII genre. Nazi’s, zombies, super soldiers, and new experimental weapons, it just doesn’t get any better for WWII.

If anything they should make a WWII game from the Nazi perspective but no one has the balls to do that.

COD 4 just has issues that are never going to be fixed. (Server Browser ECT) It’s because of this that the COD series is now just played out. It’s time for something new cause the old crap is just plain boring.

I’m assuming you’re talking about the PC version, Chris, but on both PS3 and 360 it’s a pretty smooth and enjoyable experience.

That’s what I was thinking too. It must be the PC version Chris is talking about because the few times that I have jumped online with the 360 version (I am more of a SP type of guy), I have had no problems. The only problems to be had are the immature s that seem to have come over from GoW.
