Interview – Croteam CEO: Serious Sam 3 is “Guaranteed Insanity”

Serious Sam 3: BFE is barreling headlong at PC gamers in just a week, and we sat down with Croteam’s CEO Roman Ribaric to talk about just how insane it’s going to be. Spoiler: it’s going to be really insane.

16-player co-op, huh? That sounds crazy. Just how crazy is it?

It’s seriously crazy, what do you expect? We took a great amount of care when designing levels to make sure that certain areas and key battles took into account that up to 16 players would be annihilating everything in their path. If you’ve never experienced a Serious Sam game with maximum co-op partners, then you’ll really enjoy watching the rockets, cannonballs, bullets and lasers flying across the battlefield and smashing into the hordes of enemies and destructible environments. Guaranteed insanity.

Serious Sam 3 is the fourth game with the Serious Sam brand coming out this fall. The other three are small, pretty cheap titles; do you see them as marketing tools for BFE?

We worked with our publisher Devolver Digital to launch the Serious Sam Indie Series as sort of celebration of the Serious Sam franchise and a way to support the growing indie development scene. Croteam is still a small independent team and we thought it would be great to put the franchise in the hands of some of our favorite indie developers out there. We couldn’t be more proud of Serious Sam Double D (Mommy’s Best Games) and Serious Sam: The Random Encounter (Vlambeer) which launched on PC and the totally insane Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack (Be-Rad Entertainment) on iOS and Android. Each developer was tasked with taking the series into a genre or area outside of our traditional FPS direction and really came up with some genuinely original concepts.

Serious Sam 3 is intended as a throwback game, one that’s bigger and crazier than the games you’re throwing back to, as it were. How much pressure do you feel about trying to make a game that lives up to the Serious Sam name while also being bigger and badder than the previous games?

Serious Sam 3: BFE has a lot to live up to when you take into account how beloved the original games have become and that there are thousands of core Serious Sam fans that have been anticipating a true successor for a few years. So our goal was to build upon the foundations of a classic arcade-style shooter and integrate new gameplay upgrades to bring something fresh to the series. Serious Sam 3: BFE was built on our new Serious Engine 3.5, which we perfected through development of the Serious Sam HD titles. Our team was then able to produce some astounding visuals to pair with the upgraded gameplay elements. We’ve put everything we have into it and think that both fans of the series and gamers new to the Serious Sam franchise will have a blast when it launches.
