Interview with Rogue Dao Studios: Planescape Trilogy

Spanish site DLAN has an interview with Rogue Dao Studios’ developers on their upcoming Planescape Trilogy mod for Neverwinter Nights 2. Monty, Hippo and Ryan answer questions on their latest effort to recreate this unique Dungeons & Dragons setting. Before anyone gets excited, no this is not a recreation or follow up to the popular Planescape: Torment game.

Rogue Dao chose the Planescape setting because of its cosmic scale and potential for unique story telling.

Hippo says, “Planescape is just such an absolute departure from the sword-and-sorcery mindset that it can’t be ignored. Sure, if you play in Faerun, you can be a drow ranger with scimitars and a pet panther. But if you play in Planescape, you can be the embodiment of doubt. Or a Wizard who’s lost his voice (literally – someone stole it). Or a Signer who believes this is all just some sort of table-top game in which he’s the main character. In Planescape, the possibilities are endless. Potential like that demands attention.”

The story will focus on a mortals fall into darkness, the incredible struggle to survive and escape, and consequences of witnessing the distorted world view of absolute evil

Rogue Dao has given the Neverwinter Nights Community the opportunity to participate in the series. Players can drop by the forums at and submit their D&D characters for the chance to become part of the Planescape Trilogy. As many PCs as possible will be included, taking on roles such as a major villain or player companions.

This is a great idea, I hope that they havent gotten to sick of hearing about torment but they must realize that Torment is the only game that was ever made for Planescape and it was fabulous. While Im not going to go on about that they should make a game just like it, I hope they are using it a source material. I love the fact that they are using Sigil slang such as berk, cutter, and blood. Are they going to involve the factions? Is this going to take place before or after the Torment game? Are they thinking about cameoing any of the Torment characters? Will the Lady of Pain play any part in the game?
Will thought and diolouge be more powerful then muscle and action?

And finally Torment was not only unique in being the only Planescape game but it is the ONLY rpg Ive ever heard of that the main quest did not end up saving the world, or at least a large chunk of it. Think about it every other rpg ever made, from Legend of Zelda and Ultima – to Mass Effect and Fable 2 (and every final fantasy and dragon warrior in between), all involved saving the world, Torment stands alone as the only rpg where the protagonist was simply trying to save himself. I hope your general story is similar

I have a dozen other questions but will close with just saying thank you for bringing this faboulous world back to life. Good luck and cant wait.
