Is Disney Jacking Beats From Chiptunes Artists?

Is one of the world’s largest media conglomerates stealing from the work of relatively unknown artists? Kotaku has gotten wind of a story that suggests the answer is a shameful yes. Disney has released a new app called PIXEL’D – the trailer (embedded below) features some rather majestic chiptunes music perfect for the app’s aesthetic. It’s also extremely similar to a song by chiptune band Anamanaguchi. They certainly think so, anyway, and were quick to tweet their discontent directly to Disney. Compare and contrast for yourself:

They certainly sound very similar. MY feeling is that Disney asked some in house guy to create a sound-alike, so their version is probably going to stand up to legal scrutiny, should Anamanaguchi try doing something about this. But even if the two songs aren’t identical, they’re so similar as to be unmistakable. Weak, Disney, weak.

(The image above is an 8 bit map of LA. I chose it because, you know, Disney. Hollywood bullsh*t).
