Itagaki: Devil’s Third Almost Done, Coming This Year
Tomonobu Itagaki left Tecmo in 2008 and we haven’t seen a new game from him since. If, like me, you think Itagaki’s Ninja Gaiden is one of the best action games EVA, the thought of it makes a solitary tear roll down your cheek.
Devil’s Third, the third-person shooter/melee fighter announced way back in 2010 was supposed to be the Sunglassed One’s triumphant return to gaming’s big stage, but that project drifted into limbo when publisher THQ went belly up in 2012. Now Itagaki says Devil’s Third is not only alive, but nearly complete and set for release this year.
“Next year will be the year we’ll be releasing the console game, Devil’s Third,” Itagaki told Siliconera. “At the moment, it is about 80% complete, and we can about see the end of it. However, there’s still a little more polishing that needs to be done. That’s also one of the reasons I’ve decided to work independently.”
Potentially good news, but Itagaki has been saying Devil’s Third is in its final stages of development since July 2012 when THQ cut Valhalla Studios loose. A year and a half is one seriously long final stage, so who knows what 80% complete actually means.
Devil’s Third is also an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game, at least it was last we heard, so by the time it finally does drop (if it ever does), it will be well after the new generation of consoles have been given room to breathe. At that point, I’m not sure anyone will care. And that thought is enough to make another solitary tear roll down my cheek.
