It’s Official: User-Made Video Game Videos Are Really Popular
To say that video game channels are popular on YouTube would be an understatement, and to simply say so would be rehashing a well-accepted fact—though a speculative one, at that. Backing up such statements, Google has released a whitepaper to highlight the popularity of video game-oriented channels on YouTube.
Titled “Gamers on YouTube: Evolving Video Consumption,” the paper (which you can read here) quantifies the impact of video games on the service, and contains actual evidence (in the form of statistics) about the popularity of these videos.
The key takeaway is that user-generated content like “Let’s Play” videos, machinima, walkthroughs, tutorials, and more, make up 47% of all the traffic associated with most games—making them almost as popular as official videos released by publishers.
