Jack Thompson Threatens To Sue Northern Illinois University

Unfortunately, I have more Jack Thompson news for you guys. Apparently, he has provided GamePolitics with a copy of the fax he sent this morning to the university’s public safety department in Dekalb, Illinois. I find this interesting considering he offered to help NIU just the other day. At the same time, this move isn’t exactly surprising. As I have said before, NIU has a lot more to worry about than the silly video game violence debate. It’s a real shame they have to deal with things like this in addition to what they have already been through this week. Here’s a quote from what was sent to the university:

Pursuant to the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request production of copies of all documents that reveal Steven Kazmierczak’s play of violent video games, including but not limited to the use of his computer to play Counter-Strike, which he apparently, according to the New York Post, used to rehearse for his Valentine’s Day Massacre at NIU. The killers in the two worst school massacres in history—in Erfurt, Germanay, and at Virginia Tech University—similarly trained on Counter-Strike to rehearse for their killing sprees.

If I am not provided with this information, I shall bring a civil action to secure these documents.

@Y2K: Great link. I had no idea that “in 65,000,000 B.C., he tried to sue Chuck Norris for using violence, but dropped the case after a round house kick from Chuck Norris” ….

that’s actually a pretty good site there.

Every time I hear news about him, I watch/listen this:

Jack is a douche

I have always hated Jack Tompson and his violent videogame bull. Now the more I hear about him the more I just really wanna punch this in the face.

I’m sure Jack Thompson’s kid get the beat out of him at school every single day.

“Jack Thompson is a great man only trying to save us gamers from ending up as killers”…a person who says that is no longer human and should be Jack’s lover.

On February 18, 2008 at 4:36 pm

why doesn’t he ask valve about their usernames and their player stats? like how many headshots they got..

On February 18, 2008 at 4:37 pm

wait, did I read that quote right, does Jack Thompson not know how to spell Germany?

On February 18, 2008 at 6:07 pm

Jack Thompson: The birth control of Video Games. Pitty it only increases the likelihood of sales instead of reducing them.

I feel sorry for his son. Really do. It’s not his fault, and all this negative stuff about his father will soon reach his ears, if that hasn’t already begun. So wacko isn’t just screwing up the lives of many, but the bigger shame is that he’s screwing up his son’s life. Some great Christian values he’s teaching his son there.

of course it’s the video games. and marilyn manson. it’s NEVER the fact that in Rural America guns are as easy to get as candy that’s to blame. oh, rural america… when will you learn?

On February 18, 2008 at 7:36 pm

I actually think the Encyclopedia Dramatica entry is best:

On February 18, 2008 at 9:13 pm

when are they finally gonna revoke this turd’s license to practice law?

On February 18, 2008 at 9:33 pm

So what if guns are as plentiful as hershey bars in Rosie O’Donnels pants, point still stands that these are a very small minority of people, who are incapable of handling life, regardless of whether they played video games or not, that are commiting these crimes. It’s these unstable people who need to be watched, not people who play video games, or people who own weapons.

Games don’t kill people, guns don’t kill people, people kill people. I play Counter-Strike and I have a variety of weapons that are available to me, but does that mean I’m some murder hungry fool? I have two kids!

If this guy is right about video games being simulators, why doesn’t he play some of the Ace Attorney games? maybe then he’d have a clue!

Also, why doesn’t Valve stand up for it’s developers! Apparently they aren’t anywhere near as proud of their workers as EA is.

Its only news when you make it, the guy is sending people his own news….and those people are putting it up. How about not putting it up?

Sooner people stop giving him air time the sooner he won’t have a voice.

@FrostPaw: I wish that were the case. It’s really a funny situation. News outlets like Fox News, NBC, CNN, etc. will always give Jack Thompson a chance to air his views. If video game news sites didn’t stand up against his views, then the world would only get one side of the view.

I think if we can get the word out about how his views and statements completely lack credibility, perhaps the mainstream media would avoid him. I don’t really know what the answer to this is, but we certainly can’t avoid the topic completely. JT may have some really wacked out views, but there are plenty of people in the world willing to listen to those views and back them up. His work against the music radio industries was very successful on many levels. I’d hate to see him have the same level of success against games.
