Kingdoms of Amalur Devs 1.25 M Behind On Rhode Island Loan
If you watched Showtime’s Brotherhood, then you know that despite being a tiny place, Rhode Island is a seething cesspool of brutal criminal violence just waiting to explode in your face, often during funerals and political campaign events. That’s why I cringed a little bit when I first learned of the state’s commitment to encouraging companies to move there through the use of loans, like the 75 million loan given to Kingdoms of Amalur creators 38 Studios to lure them to move to the Ocean State. NEVER BORROW MONEY FROM THE MOB!!!
I kid, I kid. But it is true that 38 Studios did accept the loan, and though Kingdoms of Amalur was a success, at least as far as Electronic Arts is concerned, that doesn’t translate to automatic riches beyond measure. 38 Studios still needs to pay down the vig, and it looks like they’re a little late on payments. After missing the last scheduled moneydrop, they’re now 1.25 million dollars behind on the loan.
Unfortunately, this could actually turn out bad for Rhode Island as well as for 38 Studios. If they can’t repay the loan, the expenses will fall on taxpayer shoulders; that could end up as high as $112.6 million by 2020. On the bright side, though this news does put the health of 38 Studios in doubt, Standard and Poor’s recently affirmed the developer’s A rating. This could be just a minor blip. But just to be safe, better not go to any dingy pubs with known members of the Irish Mob.
