King's Quest Fan Game The Silver Lining Coming Next Month

If you’re a slightly older gamer like me, you likely spent a good portion of your childhood playing through the King’s Quest series. The Roberta Williams games were a staple of the Apple IIc days, and challenged players to types things like “Look at tree” and other similarly odd statements.

Almost ten years ago, a group of King’s Quest fans began development of a new title, The Silver Lining, set in the classic universe. Five years ago, Vivendi Universal, who held the rights to the IP effectively shut the project down when they sent a cease and desist notice to the team. That notice was rescinded not long after, thanks to a letter-writing campaign staged by fans.

Things were moving along until Activision inherited the rights to King’s Quest. Earlier this year, they nixed the game‘s development again. Thus, the game was dormant until an announcement over the weekend.

It appears that Activision, after a round of negotiations, has agreed to left the cease and desist order they issued as well. We couldn’t find any details on exactly what Activision asked for or received in these negotiations, but I’m sure that will become apparent down the road.

With the legal obstacles out of the way, developer Phoenix Studios (seriously, what a perfect name for the developer of a game that has now risen from the ashes twice) has announced in a press release that the first episode of The Silver Lining will release on July 10.

The Silver Lining will be released free-of-charge in episodic format over the rest of 2010 on the game’s website. According to the aforementioned press release, “In The Silver Lining, players will assume the role of King Graham as he sets out on a quest to save his children, Rosella and Alexander, from a mysterious curse.”

While it remains to be seen how well received The Silver Lining will be, there’s no question that its development has been a saga that many gamers have followed with intense interest. To help tide you over until you can download the first episode, here’s a trailer to give you a little taste of what to expect.
