Kojima: Metal Gear 25th Anniversary Event Will ‘Shake’ Industry

One of the tedious aspects of covering an industry as flush with cash as it is with incredible talent is that gaming companies with major announcements tend to plan the reveal as though the risen body of Christ himself is behind whatever curtain they’ve erected for the day. We agree that new stuff can be great, but honestly, not every new device, game, or service can possibly be the ZOMG MOST GROUNDBREAKING EARTH SHATTERING EVARZ.

Or… could it? Kojima Productions is talking up their upcoming Metal Gear 25th anniversary event like crazy, claiming the August 30th party will contain revelations that will ‘shake the industry’. Orly? Well, Hideo Kojima (creator of Metal Gear) plans to unveil his new Fox engine, and has hinted it could be demonstrated with a new game. So, ok, the possibility of Metal Gear 5 is interesting. But industry-shaking? I think not. But Kojima apparently intends to also make an announcement about “idea of a game that connects people.”

Hmm, something tells me this is going to be kind of overblown. But hey, Metal Gear is 25 years old! It can finally rent a car. Good for it!

I’m definitely excited to see what it is, but I don’t think it will be anywhere close to “industry-shaking.” If there is one thing that the game industry is good at, it’s overdoing the hype.

He was probably lost in translation again, maybe he just meant that he was shaking to see so many industry professionals in one place. Or maybe he was asking someone to carry milkshakes “in dis tray”. Or maybe he said Snake. Guess we’ll have to wait to find out.

More likely I’m going to see it and go, “meh”. But who knows? Right? Right.
