Kotaku Snuff’s D&D Online’s New Druid Class

While this isn’t exactly newsworthy, Kotaku recently ridiculed the new Druid class that will be introduced to Dungeons & Dragons Online on June 25 via the Menace of the Underdark expansion. Being an old-school D&D fan, I feel the need to stand up for our nature-loving brethren.

With a post titled, “How can I take Dungeons & Dragons Online’s new Druid class seriously now?” featuring an image of a druid shapeshifting into a wolf, Kotaku asked for a rolled-up newspaper to presumably swat the nose of the druid that is “see [SIC] here dragging it’s [SIC] ass across the carpet.”

4th Edition’s Druid class left me underwhelmed, but 3rd Edition’s druid — which will form the basis for DDO’s incarnation — was a powerful beast, earning its rightful place amongst the game‘s “Tier 1″ classes. Kotaku’s mockery undoubtedly sprang more from the shapeshifting concept than anything else, but there is historical, mythological precedence for humans transforming into animals, particularly wolves. What’s not to take seriously?

It’s not like it’s some kind of anthropomorphized panda with breasts and an emo hairdo. That would just be silly.
