There are three goals with the new Master Yi update:
Raise his art and aesthetics so that they match the styles of recently released champions
Combine the appealing aspects of AP and AD Yi into one playstyle
Increase the emphasis on being skilled with his abilities so that he’s easier to play at a lower level but becomes powerful as the player gets better
When I started out trying my hand in the jungle, Master Yi was the champion I used to learn about clearing camps and attempting ganks. At the time, nothing satisfied me more than that beautiful Alpha Strike hum as I closed in with my team on kills. When playing among my friends, I perfected awesome backdooring strategies. My team helped defend against pushes or caused distractions while I quickly whittled away at towers and other objectives on the map. If I was deemed a threat, I pulled the opposing team towards me freeing up the rest of my team to roam and cause havoc as I disengaged with Highlander. I liked building Master Yi tanky so I could solo and absorb tower hits on my own and take risks.
What else is coming with the update?
According to Lead Content Designer Morello, Master Yi’s skills will be changed. Master Yi players who built AD strengths came from the effects of Wuju Style, Highlander, and Double Strike. Alpha Strike and Meditate required AP to be used effectively — In actuality, Alpha Strike was a net damage loss because Master Yi could have been attacking during the animation instead. Middle lane AP players relied heavily on Alpha Strike, Meditate, and Wuju Style for damage and survival. His basic attacks would’ve been useless until later in the game when he picked up additional items. That’s why the playstyles are going to be slightly blended together.
However, this does mean that building Master Yi AP won’t be as strong a choice anymore. Alpha Strike and Meditate are both being rebalanced so that they’re not as soul crushing to opponents. To offset those adjustments, the damage components of his basic attacks will be brought up. Master Yi will still continue to be playable in both the middle lane and in the jungle.
Alpha Strike – Completely scales off of AD instead of AP. Striking an enemy lowers the cooldown of Alpha Strike. It adds mini-crits to the skill based on your critical strike chance and damage.
Meditate – No longer provides a flat armor or magical resistance boost. Meditate will restore more health the weaker you are. If you use Meditate at higher levels, you will not gain as much of a benefit.
Wuju Style – Now provides a percentage boost in total attack damage instead of a flat rate.
Highlander – A passive component is added where basic cooldowns will be restored on kills and assists. The active component retains the steroid and speed benefits that the original ability used. The passive does not reset Highlander’s active itself.
Double Strike – On every 4th attack, Master Yi’s next attack will hit twice for 100% damage and 50% on the second hit — The additional double strike must be used within the next few seconds.
Also, skins. His new updated skins look cool!
