Left 4 Dead 2 Free This Weekend

OK, correct me if I’m wrong, but is Left 4 Dead the kind of thing people subscribe to? I mean, I realize it has plenty of multiplayer maps, but it’s also a single player and co-op driven game. It’s not like it’s an MMO with frequently updated content, right? Or am I wrong about that? Anyway, Valve is having something called a Left 4 Dead 2 Free Weekend to celebrate Halloween. Here’s the official announcement:

To celebrate Halloween, we are unleashing L4D2 on the world. Starting this Thursday, the entire game will be free to play for the whole weekend. New players can begin pre-loading now. For long time players, it is time to welcome your new found friends and help them survive the zombie apocalypse.

For current players, we created a new achievement. Good Guy Nick – – “Plays games with free weekend players and helps them survive a campaign.” Who is a free weekend player? You’re going to have to talk to each other to find out or you could always let your friends know Left 4 Dead 2 is going to be free this weekend and have them join you. Spread the word! It’s the zombie apocalypse, bring friends.

I don’t know guys, this sounds like a way to make us all very comfortable with the idea of gaming as a service rather than a cool thing to enjoy over the weekend. But if that doesn’t bug you, then by all means, play a game you can probably buy for 20 bucks used for free this weekend.

Steam’s done this sort of thing for a while actually. Saints Row 3 recently did the same thing if you recall. They always have some sort of sale going on over the weekend, and sometimes they’ll make the game free to play for that weekend to help you decide if you want it. Not sure why you’re surprised about this one, since you guys keep up with steam often enough that you should already know about this sort of thing.

And there it goes, L4D2 on sale for 5 bucks this weekend, and Rock of Ages doing the same free weekend and selling at 2 and a half this weekend. Might want to think again about getting it used for 20 bucks, if you use steam anyways.

Steam does free weekends for lots of games, they seem to do it every other week or so. Doesn’t seem unusual to me.
