Hylian Shield Unlockable

  1. Before you can attempt to unlock the Hylian Shield, you’ll need to complete the first eight bosses. (Thanks to Cloud for the correction.)
  2. Accept the Boss Rush Challenge in Lanayru Gorge. Defeat all eight bosses in a row to unlock the Hylian Shield, which is described by the Thunder Dragon as an “absurdly sturdy shield.” Goodluck!

you can do this in normal too, :S you get boss rush in the normal one, i just got it lol, unless you can get it earlyer or something?

cloud

On November 22, 2011 at 6:07 pm

you can get it as soon as you beat the first 8 bosses then all you have to do is go defeat the boss rush mode and beat all the bosses that you have defeated… yeah you get it late in game but the earlier you get it the better even though you need to wait till after the first 8 bosses sadly.. so pretty much upgrade to the best shield possible before you do this and have everything upgraded as high as possible and it should be easy.

Serengo

On November 24, 2011 at 10:32 pm

What is the first 8 bosses? I see different sites saying different things. Is it just the dungeon bosses? Is the Imprisoned considered a boss each time you fight him?

GlitchGuy

On November 27, 2011 at 9:27 am

There aren’t 8 dungeon bossess so that means the Imprisoned counts and so does Levias. Because Levias is actually the 8th boss, and you need to beat him to access Lanayru Gorge, it works both ways. You just need to heal Lanayru the dragon spirit with the Fruit of Life plant, that you plant in the Sealed Temple past.

Jeff

On November 27, 2011 at 10:09 am

These are the first 8 bosses.
Ghirahim (First Dungeon)
Scaldera (Second Dungeon)
Moldarach (Third Dungeon)
The Imprisoned (Defending at Seal Grounds)
Koloktos (Fourth Dungeon)
Tentalus (Fifth Dungeon)
Ghirahim Part 2 (Six Dungeon)
The Imprisoned Part 2 (Defending at Seal Grounds)

So the earliest you can get the Hylian Shield is right after The Imprisoned Part 2 (Where he grew arms)

@Hurulesavior:

LOL if you think this game is the best game ever than you clearly don’t know a lot of games do you?

Zelda Ocarina of Time is the best game ever. Skyward Sword doesn’t even come near the greatness of Ocarina of Time. :-)

I’ve beaten ocarina of time and this clearly beats that game

Wanna know what beats both OoT and SS? Majora’s Mask.

kiladar

On December 1, 2011 at 5:41 pm

Majoras mask sucked it doesn’t really fit the story line the best Zelda games are no doubt the original lgoz, a link to the past, Oot, wind waker, tp, and skyward sword.

Zelda phan

On December 1, 2011 at 6:29 pm

Yeah, Skyward sword beats Ocarina of Time, but it’s still a classic and one of the best. The only thing that could make Skyward Sword better, is if the graphics from Twilight Princess were there instead of the semi-cartoon looking graphics, but besides that, such an amazing game.

UMM Zelda phan ur a noob thats all i can say u complain about the graphics. Zelda Games are ment for gameplay and enjoyment and a third of it is graphics and cutscenes so YO a NOOB and skyward sword come close second compaired to Ocarina of time nothing can beat that GAME!!!!!!!!!!! Peace

The bosses are chosen at random, for instance I fought Ghirahim, then Ghirahim’s second phase, then Scaldera, etc etc. For those still wondering, the Imprisoned -does- count as a boss, every time you fought him. Good thing is, you only have to beat 8 bosses, even though the full boss run through is 10, 9 bosses will get you 2,000 rupees, but I didn’t go to 10 because I just wanted the shield. So, if you luck out, you only have to fight the Imprisoned once, though I had to fight him twice. But, since you have the handy dandy Master Sword, your fights go a lot faster.

Also, to those fighting about how good this game is and yaddayadda. It’s a Zelda game, they’re /all/ equally amazing. (Though I have a soft spot for Majora’s Mask and its characters, it had a really good plot and great in depth characters). ANYWAYZ that’s enough nerding out for me.

Bureki

On December 3, 2011 at 9:02 am

My soft spot is for A Link to the Past.

Good times. Good times.

Steve

On December 4, 2011 at 5:19 pm

Jeff is wrong.

You cannot unlock Lanayru and the boss trial until after you complete the forest portion of the Song of the Hero. That leaves with you 10 potential bosses to kill to get the shield. I suggest choosing Round Two of The Imprisoned to knock the hardest fight out first or you can pick an easy one and restart if that one crops up in the random.

SS is th best

On December 4, 2011 at 10:56 pm

skyward sword is clearly the and all u silly buts who think Oot is the best then u suck coz just because its a stupid classic doesnt mean its the best zelda games have improved heaps over the past decade

HyruleKing

On December 5, 2011 at 9:52 pm

Gotta say, Skyward Sword is definitely the best Zelda game with Ocarina of Time taking a close second. Skyward Sword sets up the backstory of the entire Zelda series, and Ocarina of Time gives us the introduction of Ganondorf, and between the two, we’re given all the myths and lore of the Triforce, Master Sword, and Hyrule’s creation. So, the two really almost tie as the best Zelda game of all time. But Skyward Sword’s gameplay and controls give it the win.

Dedicated2

On December 6, 2011 at 2:02 pm

people are now discussing if this game or Ocarina of Time is better. I personally gotta say they are EXTREMEMLY close. even magazines and such are saying that Skyward Sword is up there right next to OoT which I firmly believe. this game is amazing! but so was OoT

vincent

@Steve: I’m playing hero mode right now and I chose lanaryu Gorge first before any of them, it doesnt have to go in order, and god damn getting the shield is harder in hero mode =_=

cody

On December 13, 2011 at 2:10 pm

I’ve already beaten the imprisoned the 3rd time and why can’t you buy it in every other zelda you can plus all the bosses are too easy i mean all you have to do is keep shaking the out of the remote but this is still the best zelda so far because it has more action

cody

On December 13, 2011 at 2:14 pm

plus at first i thought you had to keep upgrading the sacred shield to get the hylian shield because you have to admit the are similar

I was upset that the TV commercials said that this was the most challenging Zelda game ever. I know infants that could beat this game in under a week. I mean, the bosses and creatures are easy, no hard puzzles, and lame easy to beat dungeons. This game was created for poo poo pants five year olds. I don’t see why they had to make this game so easy. Another thing, Fi is the est Zelda creation ever! The game would have been at least 20% better without that annoying singing and dancing blue ghost thing.

now now we all have our own opinions in my opinion ive never played OoT except i have beaten the 3d version(which i own)and i got to say that game is easier to me than SS will ever be in enemies, i mean cmon he hates skulltulas in SS WAAAAY more than OoT? I sure do(i got way of track too)… HOWEVER SS to me will beat Oot by like hmm 2 pts? SS=(97/100) OoT=(95/100)
My opinion, My life, MY CHOICES

If Ocarina of Time and Link’s Awakening were re-designed to use Wii graphics with Skyward Sword controls/game play, I think they’d be the best selling Nintendo games of all time.

OOT FTW!

cresent

On December 28, 2011 at 1:32 pm

@ SS for th win
You must have never played OOt then so go play it and come back when you’ve played the original n64 version not any of the new ones for gc or wii shop or 3ds then you decide.

lolwut

On December 29, 2011 at 12:32 pm

Hey here’s an idea @everybody
If you were a REAL Zelda fan, you wouldn’t be comparing the games and enjoy each of them for what they are. Instead you just sound like the typical gamin community that has to compare almost everything. Not even a real fan.

And @cresent, what would playing the original N64 version do? It’s the exact same game on the Wii Shop and 3DS…

DarthFrogger

On December 30, 2011 at 4:22 pm

All you twits that say “derp OoT cause you can’t beat the classics Derp” fail to realise that one, OoT was new at some point, and people said the same about its predecessors, and two, SS will eventually become a classic, and we’ll be saying the same about it vs its offspring.
Also, I honesty feel OoT and SS are level-pegging.

Shawn R

On January 1, 2012 at 11:44 am

What do you get if you kill all ten bosses?

Elizabeth

On January 1, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Wind Waker deserves a little more credit. It was a great game with a great story, despite the cell-shaded graphics. TP and OoT always have been my favorites but SS makes it up there, too. The original OoT was great, and after playing that, all of the redone versions like Master Quest and the 3DS version are amazing because it is the same thing, just twisted a bit to keep it interesting and challenging, but they are nothing unless you have played the original first. I grew up playing these games, and I can’t help being over critical to SS. I’m just glad that after 25 years, they are still producing Zelda games that are just as good as the originals.
I did miss the Hylian Shield first run through though and was a bit disappointed.

NefTheSerperior

On January 1, 2012 at 9:52 pm

Sadly, I had to fight all three of The Imprisoned(s) when I was trying to get the shield, I really hated those fights (except the first one, which died almost with a minute because my sword was maxed out)……..at least two of those battles were with Ghirahim. He is just so easy to beat, such a weakling (…..please don’t kill me!!)

@everybody this is an amazing game it combines the grapghix of WW and TP gives it the more dificultness (i just made a new werd) of OOT and also takes the awakening the sword part from windwaker and the stolen very important person plot to make it absolutely freaking amazing game so its like all rolled into one big awesome game not to mention tht this time ur companion isnt dark short or a boat in this game but an actual human sized thing

@Shawn R you get 2000 rupees

Dekudude

On January 2, 2012 at 2:49 pm

On a lighter note. Who else was 95% sure that they were going to go to the sparring hall and beg the instructor to give you back the sword you borrowed early on in exchange for the Goddess sword and it’s permanent tenant. Fi got under my skin the majority of the game with her ridiculous captain obvious one liners and interpretive dance routines. However it ended up just making me laugh more and easing my frustration. I’m just glad I now know how to distinguish between Zelda and a Kikwi! I miss Navi…

Zephraxe

On January 3, 2012 at 6:52 pm

What do you do if you in hero mode? I got the hylian shield in regular mode, but in hero mode you have potential of fighting every boss including Demise even if you haven’t beaten them in hero mode.

Zephraxe

On January 3, 2012 at 6:55 pm

That last comment really isn’t a question. It’s just way harder since every attack does double damage.

On January 6, 2012 at 1:03 am

I must say that this game does not “BEAT” OoT, they both have entirely different play styles. To those of you who argue that wildly swinging the wii mote is different from just bashing the B button over and over again – your argument is invalid. The Concept of SS is to give the player more control over their hero – thus making them feel more as if they themselves are the hero.
The game is no easier then OoT, and no harder then Twilight Princess.
The problem Twilight Princess had was that it was trying TOO HARD to be like OoT, while SS took what was great about OoT and made new things. As far as character development goes – SS did a wonderful job on each of its characters and through sidequests, each character became more lively. Another thing to point out is that each character was used in a quest at one point, unlike previous games such as OoT – MM – and TP where some characters were not explored. As for the graphics – I thought their choice was a killer decision. They wanted to keep the design of link from TP but give it a look that resembled the OoT link *Hence the white-ish pants link wears* The graphics themselves are really just a combination of the cartoony windwaker and the Edgy TP.
As for the temples – I’d say they increased the puzzle difficulty to be honest. I actually found myself stuck quite a few times on a lot of them. Zelda temples are inherently on the easy side to start with so this is an improvement in my opinion.
As for links companion Guide, while I don’t dislike “Fi” I had a few problems with the character. For starters she speaks in computer lingo half the time. Made me feel like I was hanging with C3-PO always telling me the odds and what not. As well as the fact that they could’ve given her more personality. She talked like a robot and that is what her character felt like to me, a robot with no real personality. Nothing like Midna who obviously had the best personality as far as link’s guides go. So that was disappointing. For the difficulty, I would say its at about 7 of 10, difficult but not so hard you hate playing. For the graphics all though not important I will say Nintendo did a very good job in their design choice and execution of the art style during cut scenes. Very vibrant and colorful terrain – an improvement from TP bland choices of color. You can’t really rate graphics so I won’t bother. For their temple design 10/10 for using new concepts as well as cultural influences. Loved fire sanctuary. Gameplay gets an 8/10 in my opinion only because they are just scratching the surface of how to use the motion controls with this game, I feel as though they could have integrated the motion controls better with weapons such as the clawshots and the bow. On a final note SS is also intended as a game that celebrates the zelda franchise. If one pays attention this is apparent because it takes a concept FROM EACH PREVIOUS ZELDA GAME from the rope and claw of wind waker, to the altering of terrain from oracle of seasons, to the travel style of wind waker, and even attributions from OoT, majora’s mask, and of course the appearance of key songs from the OoT Soundtrack :D . I’d give this game a 9 out of 10 only because while it was executed with about as much grace as Ghirahem’s fighting style – there was still clear room for improvement and more integration of the motion controls.

I personally loved windwaker because it was my first zelda game. We never had an N64, and we got a gamecube when I was about seven. I also got Oot with windwaker but didn’t have much success because I was only little. I absolutely loved TP. I thought the storyline was good, i love midna and I even like the darkness of it all. SS has irriatated me a bit. I mean I love the gameplay and the way it combines all of the previous games but my GOD fi annoys me, with her stupid dances and stuff. However I love the bird flying and powering up sword stuff like windwaker. I have found it easier than Oot just because its more obvious what to do it think. Also I think that the graphics does help. If TP and SS were on a proper controller like windwaker and Oot I think I would enjoy them more. I like buttons ok?

dropdizzle

On January 7, 2012 at 8:30 am

A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening are clearly the best Zelda games. Skyward Sword was too gimmicky and repetitive. Too much backtracking and far too linear for a Zelda game. Also the character design is ridiculous. I like the cartoony look and how bright and colourful everything is, but I don’t like demonic whales with legs and throat anuses.

drixson

On January 11, 2012 at 6:53 am

my favorites go majora’s mask, because of the concept, just think it’s awesome :)
the feel of an impending doom, and the characters daily routines, no other zelda has this, like it’s like groundhog day!
second, wind waker.
I put so many hours into that game, exploring the oceans, getting lost at sea and i really loved the story and characters, the freedom of that game makes it for me :)
3rd, ocarina of time.
first zelda game i ever played :) so it’s nostalgic. love the classic epic story line.
4th, skyward sword.
the gameplay is brill, the temples fab, the only reason this is fourth is because i don’t like the fact that you don’t really have an overworld :/
and the TW is 5th.

BEAT THEM ALL

On January 12, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Alright this game has got to be compared to the original of OoT. Rating wise SS is even to OoT. My personal favorite was the original just called zelda. The hardest to date had to be the second one or Link. But every game can stand on its own and they are all extremely good games which can stand alone. SS was a good way to attempt to tell the origin of the story. And Link if you were could be as kind as to learn about HERO MODE. it is in almost all if not all the games. just some of the hero modes are not all that entertaining. I am speaking about WW. ZELDA SERIES 9.9/10 only reason not 10/10 was the weak attempt to tie them all together where OoT is the focal point. When time travel is the only way you can tie the whole stories together you should just let the fans speculate.

Honestly I don’t know how anyone found this game hard. I was able to sit down and bet ad least two temples in two hours of play time. Where as in oot, tp or even wind waker I would of been stuck at some puzzles for hours. The main reason this game is so highly praised is because it leaves you with a sense of nostalgia. Even though it holds your hand through the entire quest. And personally I hated the semi-cartoon graphics. They should of just chosen wind waker full cartoon or tp awesome dark graphics. As for the controls, they were as good as wii controls get. But blindly flailing your arm around is dumber and more physically exerting then the classic Zelda control scheme on an actual controller. Maybe I would of liked it more if it was on game cube. Don’t get me wrong its an amazing game. Just not the best, or even second best in the series ,

Narutowolf77

On January 16, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Okay to give my input into which Zelda game is the best. My brother and I actually discussed this one day Ocarina of Time us the UNSPOKEN best, meaning it is such a classic that it doesn’t even need to come up in conversations about which Zelda game is the best. This is true even if a different Zelda game is your favorite, while OoT may not have the best graphics of today but taking into consideration it was released over ten years ago it’s pretty amazing and it also sets up the story for all the Zelda games that follow. Now after OoT comes the spoken best for me it is a close tie between TP(loved it for the graphics and story) and Skyward Sword(Graphics are pretty nice, controls are cool but I feel they over did the motion plus at times, the story also fills you with a sense of nostalgia as you pick up on things from other Zelda games)

Link is awesome

On January 17, 2012 at 12:38 pm

oooohh now I can’t wait to try to get the Hylian Sheild!
I just got the original LoZ, LoZII, and OoT from the wii points shop, cuz I don’t own the original systems. so I don’t really have an opinon on those games yet exect for that the original is kinda hard.
My favorite game so far is definitly Skyward Sword
I also really liked Phantom Hourglass, maybe partly cuz it was my first zelda game, but it’s just super cool. they all are (and I’m working on getting to all of them) I just love these games :-)

Ocarina of Time all the way!!!

On January 17, 2012 at 11:09 pm

Skyward Sword was a good game with nice controls and graphics, and I would say even beats OoT story wise, but what SS is lacking somewhat is difficulty. Nintendo seems to be switching it’s focus onto a generally younger audience, and as a result puzzles and things to figure out have become much easier. Although in comparison it was a good story with good controls and gameplay, for the sole purpose of working my head OoT, in MY opinion, was better. Note the emphasis on the word my. Don’t hate on me.

I just want to say that I play Zelda games mainly for the storyline. Everything else is a bonus :P . But really, SS ties the storyline in to OoT and all the other 3D zelda’s (except MM). They included something from every Zelda game that they have released. Fi was irrelevant in the game and didnt really matter to me. I liked Midna better just because she had a mind of her own and Navi got on my every last nerve: HEY!!! Great game though I just beat it.

Majoras Mask was good but is confusing and doesn’t fit into the normal feeling that all zelda games have. Oot was epic and will always be but naturally newer games are more flowing. Skyward sword is as good as Oot storywise and the controls are way better. But the time it takes to get the hylian shield i is absurd and should be an essential part of the game. Strange how that one thing is so frustrating. They should have made it possible to buy and upgrade. Instead of spending two frustrating hours beating all the bosses. :) peace zelda fans

This is about obtaining the Hylian shield…where the hell did people come about comparing which game is best? If you’re a true fan you enjoy the franchise regardless and dont care which one is better…

Honestly, if you have the master sword and the sacred sheild, it goes pretty fast. I chose Imprisoned 3 as my first one to get it over with and spent some time screaming about how Link is stupid falling off the monster when i shot him at it. It really is worth all that though because that is the hardest boss of them all, just use your shield alot and collect your hearts back up on Ghirahim 2 and you’ll get by in a breeze.
Plus, to tell you the truth, the final boss really isn’t that hard, especially if you have the hylian sheild (and use it alot)and the guardian potion and hearts potion.

well i got everything i can possibly get in both modes(including this shield)just wondering has anyone at all beaten all the bosses in boss rush in hero mode?(early, mid and late including demise and the beast horde)

iv found iv beaten all of the bosses except the beast horde in a row(it is clearly the hardest for me)

another thing is has anyone beaten that damned mole game on expert? those are the only 2 things i haven’t beaten in this game and would like to know what you could possibly get for such crazyness(im guessing just rupees but still im curious if theres some secret unlock from the mole thing)

i think OoT is the best, because u have the child and adult, plus its more challenging. SS is so easy, my mom ( who has been playing zelda since it came out) got it for christmas, i played on winter break, and by the time i went back 2 school, i was already at the 2nd flame! SS is so much less challenging than OoT, thats why i like OoT better

I think the first Zelda game you ‘properly’ play is the one you’ll always have a soft spot for, the one that will leave the biggest mark on you, the deepest memories. That’s why, for me, I believe Twilight Princess is an extremely underrated game, and while perhaps not the best Zelda, is without doubt the best game I’ve ever played. I haven’t had the pleasure of playing through every game in the series, but for me the memories of that game shine through everytime I think back. The music, the dungeons, the characters, the dark yet powerful style – for me I am reminded of this every time I play Skyward Sword, and each time I am reminded that SS is not the same game, and for me does not even come close. Zelda games are the type of games that stay with you forever. Twilight Princess will certainly do that for me.

I think SS is the best because it takes all the best things from the things from the previous games and puts them in one. Also the graphics are ok because it compliments the light heartedness of the game.

Also, why is Ghirahim like the easiest boss in the game, when hes meant to be the main bad guy?WTF

Link’s Awakening and OOT were the best ones of all time, end of story.

The controls sucked

Zephraxe

On March 19, 2012 at 9:21 pm

You are a party pooper if you think the controls suck, because I’ve always wanted to be able to control the sword with greater accuracy ever since I battled Ganondorf in Twilight Princess. That battle would have been even more epic than it already was if I had more control over the Master Sword. You are a mindless bokoblin if you didn’t like the graphics because they are key to the mood of the entire story. Most importantly though is that (almost) everyone only cares about “graphics” or “gameplay”, but that’s not what a game like the Legend of Zelda is about. It’s about the story and artwork the creators made with their brilliant minds. Also, if you’re going to hate on the Zelda games, why play them at all?

There are so many components in the Zelda games its hard to pick one as my favorite. I would have to say that for the controls and storyline Skyward Sword would win, with Ocarina of Time coming at a close second for storyline. I also had a slight problem with the instrument in Skyward Sword. I liked how you could learn actual songs on the Ocarina of Time, but on Skyward Sword it feels just random. Also, another thing I miss is how you can combine arrows and bombs as seen on Twilight Princess and in Skyward Sword there are no Zoras. I love how you can get Ocarina of Time for wii but the controls do seem a bit harder with the wii classic controller. For the best helper in the games I would have to say it is Midna. All in all, all Zelda games are amazing.

ok wtf. so i beat the 8 bosses and quit when it said to quit for the shield. it did that “yay i just got this new cool thing” music and was all “u hav the hylian shield blah blah blah” but i didn’t have enough room in my adventure pouch…i decided not to read the rest of what it said but now i don’t hav the shield. Someone please help? I’m not sure how to get it and i really hope i don’t hav to battle everyone again

These is for cloud! I just beated the 8 bosses, and I did it without a shield and without potions because I knew I could do it without them >:D

Theyre all good

On June 24, 2012 at 11:42 pm

But OOT will always be my favorite. The nostalgia, story, characters, I love it. From there it’s Twilight Princess because it kicks ass, then Majora’s Mask, then Wind Waker. I guess Skyward Sword is still too new for me to really like it as much as the others. But its still pretty damn good.

@HeroofTime185

I can’t believe this guys is judging a couple of zelda games just because of the graphics, well link doesn’t always have to be older just to be awesome! to be honest i said Ocarina of time’s graphics were pretty bad but it improved barely in the 3ds game, it’s still was funner than not having the game at all! Like they say, never judge a book by it’s cover.
