The Black Gate
This is it. Merry, Pippin, Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas and Gimli are joined together in this massive battle at the gates of Mordor. You’re Frodo and Sam’s only hope!
The level begins with your party surrounded by an army of Orcs. Before long, a Cave Troll will attack with his massive ball-and-chain.
When the Troll appears, he’ll also reveal a cracked Lego brick in the ground. Use Gimli to smash the brick with his jump-attack. Build the hopping bricks to form a brown Lego floor.
Just like in the battle against the Black Rider, you’ll need to stand on this brown Lego floor so the Troll attacks, getting his ball-and-chain stuck.
When he does, he’ll hit himself. This Troll is much faster than the one you fought way back in the mines, so be quick to avoid his attacks.
After the Troll hurts himself, more boulders will land in the arena. Destroy all the boulders to collect enough hopping bricks to construct another brown Lego floor.
Once again, stand on the brown Lego floor with the gold pointer above until the Troll attacks. If his ball-and-chain gets stuck, he’ll hurt himself trying to get it back out.
To build the third brown Lego base, switch to Aragorn after the Troll hits itself twice. Catapults will launch three Morgul Lego objects. Destroy all three with Aragorn’s sword, then build the bricks.
Stand on the base until the creature roars, then move away! That means it’s about to throw the ball-and-chain forward.
After three hits, the Troll will fall, but a Black Rider will take his place. This time, you’ll need to fight the Black Rider differently – when it rears back on it’s hind legs, use Legolas to shoot the target on the monster’s chest.
The battlefield will open up, allowing you to move to the left side of the wall. Beware, an Armored Troll is waiting ahead.
Confront the Armored Troll, then look against the back rock wall for a platform above the ground. Reach it with Legolas by jumping up from the three stacked rocks.
On this platform, aim your bow and shoot the targets on the Troll’s shoulder pads. Once both are destroyed, the three rocks below will break into hopping bricks. Switch to Pippin and build them to form a tiny door.
Use Pippin to crawl through the tiny door, and jump onto the platform Legolas just used. Interact with the gold circle to jump on the Troll’s back, then mash the attack button. Eventually, you’ll stun the Troll.
When the Troll is stunned, you’ll see pointers around its head. Switch to Legolas and aim for the Troll’s head to defeat it.
That draws the Black Rider back. Your team will return to the center circle. Remember, Legolas will need to shoot the target on the Rider’s chest when the dragon rears back before it attacks.
Hitting the Black Rider will scare it away, but draw in another Armored Troll. This Troll is guarded by Morgul Lego objects, which can only be destroyed by Aragorn’s sword.
But, you can’t just attack it. Stay away until the Troll wears itself out. When it takes a rest, a gold circle will appear. Run into the circle with Aragorn and interact to knock off a piece of it’s armor. Do it a second time to completely remove all the Troll’s armor.
When both pieces of armor are broken, the Troll will retreat left. Follow it!
In front of the silver Lego boulders, the Troll will smash some Lego objects to leave behind hopping bricks. Construct the bricks into the lowest of three arrow-slots.
Arrow-slots need Legolas. Switch to the elf, and shoot an arrow into each slot. Once all three are filled, jump from one slot to the next to reach the high landing to the right.
Smash the Lego object in the landing’s back corner and construct the bricks into a brown Lego floor. Stand on it until the Troll roars and attacks, getting his ball-and-chain stuck.
Legolas can jump onto the stuck ball-and-chain like a tightrope. When he does, aim for the Troll’s head to defeat it.
That ends the level, when you continue the story, switch to Frodo and Sam. The way through Mordor is clear, they can now travel to Mount Doom.

Question: you say above “Now, you begin a new level proper with four Hobbits in your team. You’ll have Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin together.”… but I only have Frodo and Sam. That means when I get to the fishing part, I’m completely stuck – because I don’t have a character who can fish.
I’ve tried restarting, but it only lets me restart back to the Gandalf fight, and when I make it back to the Hobbits… again, only Frodo and Sam are there.
Any suggestions on what I can do? Even if I have to force restart the whole level to try again, fine – but I can’t even get it to do that.

Use Gollum to do the fishing!

In this taming Gollum level, I cannot switch weapons with Frodo’s to choose the light so that I can go in the cave. I’m not really sure what to do next since I can’t access that fish without it. Any suggestions?

@Nicole,
If you’re unable to switch weapons/items, try simply walking into the dark cave with Frodo. He’ll automatically take out his light for you, which is really handy.
Let me know if that helps, or if you encounter any other problems.

Regarding the checkered pattern of Lego bricks with the boulder: you have to give the boulder a good push so that it falls, then topples over to create a path for Isildur. If you just nudge it off the pattern, the boulder will stand up in the lava and not topple. If this happens, restart the level and really put your shoulder into it next time, Elrond.
Melissa, regarding using the fishing pole, you can play any combination of the four Hobbits (use Z or C to change characters). You just can’t be the same Hobbit at once.

Melissa — I had the same issue and finally figured out the answer. You actually can play with all four characters on the Wii version (and most likely all versions of course), even though it only shows two at a time. You start with Frodo and Sam, but if you hold down “C” you can switch characters and pick Merry. This allows you to fish and move throw the river portion of this level. I hope that helps!

@Kerry,
Are you fighting the ghost leader at the end of the level? If so, make sure you hit him with Aragorn’s sword during the fight — can you give a little more description? I’ll try to help however I can.
Thanks for the comment, Kerry!

@jim,
There are two ways to break shiny objects. You can buy fireworks at the mithril shop, if you can unlock it — or you can buy the Berserker character after finishing Helm’s Deep during the campaign. Either of those explosive choices should allow you to destroy shiny bricks.

I am on the level and I accidently played as Frodo the whole time and now Sam can’t wear any armor. What can I do? Frodo has both helmets and breast pieces and we aren’t disguised.

@Jennifer,
Sadly, you might need to restart from the beginning. I had to do the same thing while playing, make sure you collect the armor in order. I collected the armor out of order my first time, and some weird bugs show up that’ll stop your progress dead.
