The Fellowship of the Ring

The Two Towers

The Return of the King

Welcome to Lego Lord of the Rings! The game starts off fast, so let’s go over some basics.

In the Lego games, you’ll have control of a particular Lego character, but you’ll be able to switch between everyone at any time. The characters you can switch to will follow you around.

If you don’t know the controls, pause the game and select “Show Game Controls” to see all the things you can do.

Each character has his or her own unique abilities, we’ll go over each power once they become important to push forward.

The Lego characters each have an attack. Jump and attack for a ground-stomp, or press the attack button repeatedly for a combo.

Every level requires you and your Lego characters to work together to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.

Inside every level you’ll find special collectible Lego treasure chests, and more. There’s a lot to collect, but for the purposes of this guide, we’ll simply show you how to complete every level of Story Mode.

Don’t bother trying to find every item your first time through a level – often, you’ll need characters with powers the story won’t provide. When you replay a level, you can do so in “Free Mode” allowing you to choose any character you wish.

That’s a lot of introduction! But, the game starts off with a bang! In your team, you’ll begin with Isildur, Elrond, and Elendil. At the top of the screen you’ll see five Orc flags – that means you’ll need to defeat five angry Orcs.

If you really want to kick butt, switch to Elendil and use his jump-attack to create a giant fireball! It’s pretty impressive.

Target the Orcs with red shields and flags on their backs. After defeating five, you’ll need to defeat three more. Watch out, if you try to attack the shield-carrying Orcs, you might have to mash the attack button to hurt them.

If you don’t want to mash buttons, just use a jump-attack to instantly hurt or defeat the tough Orc baddies.

Eventually, you’ll probably notice those hearts at the top of the screen. The hearts show how many hits your hero will take. Once the hearts are drained, you’ll lose a portion of the collected Lego studs. The studs work as currency, but don’t worry, you’ll find plenty throughout the game.

After the Orcs are defeated, Mount Doom will explode and Orc structures will burst out of the ground! There’s only one way to defeat these glowing blocks, with Elendil’s sword.

Switch to Elendil and attack the glowing bricks with his sword. A few swipes will destroy the towers and leave the flag-Orcs exposed. Defeat them too!

So begins a short cutscene… and then the Dark Lord Sauron will show himself! You’ll be stuck in a small area as Sauron smashes his way through your army! Just wait for him too approach, for now.

The army will retreat, leaving you and your Lego heroes to fight Sauron. Stay far away, and wait for him to attack with his mighty mace.

After a few attacks, the mace will get stuck in the ground. This is your chance! Attack the mace, and with another sword swipes you’ll damage Sauron.

Remember, only Elendil can damage Sauron’s mace! Run away and defeat any Orcs that get in your way until Sauron gets his mace stuck in the ground again.

At the last wave, you might not be able to damage his mace in one go. He’ll pull the mace free much faster. Just wait until he does it again, eventually you’ll defeat the Dark Lord.

Once the Dark Lord is defeated, you’ll be taken to a new area with Isildur and Elrond. Jump across the lava flow to your right, and use the handholds to shimmy right and jump up to the next level of the cliff.

Use Isildur’s sword to smash the Orc structures ahead, then use the floating bricks to jump across another stream of lava.

Past the second stream, you’ll find a group of Orcs. Cut them down and look out for the flames shooting out from the rock. Ahead is a third lava stream.

To get across, destroy the Lego bricks strewn in the background, below the handholds. Once the bricks are destroyed, you’ll be able to jump up the handholds and shimmy across the lava to safety.

Across, three Orcs will jump out of the wall. Defeat them, then use Isildur’s sword to destroy the glowing structure to create a path up.

Up the wooden Lego bridge, you’ll find a flowery marker. These show you were elves can jump to reach high places! Switch Elrond to jump right at the flower marker to get up to the next area.

On the checkered pattern of Lego bricks, you’ll spot a boulder. Checker patterns signify where you can push rocks. Push the rock into the lava to create a path for Isildur to cross. He can now use the rock to jump over the lava and continue right.

Switch to Isildur and jump across the lava, then smash the Orc structures to the right. Jump over the small gap, then use the handhold further ahead in the background to jump up the ledge and to the entrance into Mount Doom!

At the entrance, orcs will attack while boulders will fall from the sky. Defeat all the incoming Orcs until the doors into Mount Doom swing open, revealing even more Orcs. Wipe the monsters out, and run inside toward the orange light.

Simply run toward the ledge to your right, toward the very center of the volcano. Once you reach the edge, the level will complete!

Congratulations on finishing the first level of Lego Lord of the Rings. You’ve got a long journey ahead of you, please join us as we get the game started proper.

Welcome to the Hub World of Lego Lord of the Rings. Here, you’ll be able to access every story mission – usually by following the floating blue-hued ghost studs to your next destination.

If you’re ever lost, just look for the blue clear studs. These ghost studs will always lead you to your next objective. The studs, this time, will lead you out of the town and toward a large pointer in the fields.

At the pointer, you’ll begin the next level.

Question: you say above “Now, you begin a new level proper with four Hobbits in your team. You’ll have Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin together.”… but I only have Frodo and Sam. That means when I get to the fishing part, I’m completely stuck – because I don’t have a character who can fish.

I’ve tried restarting, but it only lets me restart back to the Gandalf fight, and when I make it back to the Hobbits… again, only Frodo and Sam are there.

Any suggestions on what I can do? Even if I have to force restart the whole level to try again, fine – but I can’t even get it to do that.

Use Gollum to do the fishing!

In this taming Gollum level, I cannot switch weapons with Frodo’s to choose the light so that I can go in the cave. I’m not really sure what to do next since I can’t access that fish without it. Any suggestions?

If you’re unable to switch weapons/items, try simply walking into the dark cave with Frodo. He’ll automatically take out his light for you, which is really handy.

Let me know if that helps, or if you encounter any other problems.

Regarding the checkered pattern of Lego bricks with the boulder: you have to give the boulder a good push so that it falls, then topples over to create a path for Isildur. If you just nudge it off the pattern, the boulder will stand up in the lava and not topple. If this happens, restart the level and really put your shoulder into it next time, Elrond.

Melissa, regarding using the fishing pole, you can play any combination of the four Hobbits (use Z or C to change characters). You just can’t be the same Hobbit at once.

    On December 30, 2012 at 10:11 pm

Melissa — I had the same issue and finally figured out the answer. You actually can play with all four characters on the Wii version (and most likely all versions of course), even though it only shows two at a time. You start with Frodo and Sam, but if you hold down “C” you can switch characters and pick Merry. This allows you to fish and move throw the river portion of this level. I hope that helps!

Are you fighting the ghost leader at the end of the level? If so, make sure you hit him with Aragorn’s sword during the fight — can you give a little more description? I’ll try to help however I can.

    Thanks for the comment, Kerry!

what is used to break shining objects through out the game

    Kevin Thielenhaus

There are two ways to break shiny objects. You can buy fireworks at the mithril shop, if you can unlock it — or you can buy the Berserker character after finishing Helm’s Deep during the campaign. Either of those explosive choices should allow you to destroy shiny bricks.

I am on the level and I accidently played as Frodo the whole time and now Sam can’t wear any armor. What can I do? Frodo has both helmets and breast pieces and we aren’t disguised.

Sadly, you might need to restart from the beginning. I had to do the same thing while playing, make sure you collect the armor in order. I collected the armor out of order my first time, and some weird bugs show up that’ll stop your progress dead.

I’m stuck at the end of level three….the pass of caradhras….have put the pieces in the door, built the fire pit and collected two of the fire pieces. But the one behind the “wood wall” I can not get to. Walkthrough says to just smash it….have tried every character available to me and no one breaks it….really getting frustrated….any suggestions. Have restarted level already.

Stuck in the Mines of Moria:
We are stuck in the Mines of Moria. We have smashed the two chests and finished the well. We have unlocked the chest with the key and found the gear. We have smashed the wall and found the crank. We have installed the gear and the crank (in that order). Once the crank is in place, we get the sign to turn it and can see the little meter, but the crank will not turn. ALl the characters go to the crank and put their hands on it, but it does not turn. We have tried all available characters. We have gone back several times and tried completing the various sections in a different order, but nothing seems to work. The game was purchased from a chain store. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Weird. We’re having the same problem as Kerry a year ago. At the end of Paths of the Dead, we kill the King of the Dead on the first platform, then on the second. Then we build the four columns for the third stage. We fight him atop each platform, then he destroys it and keeps flying from platform location to platform location, including the platforms that have already been destroyed. After fighting him on the fourth platform, he destroys that one too, but keeps flying around.

I just watched a video walkthrough, and there, as soon as the King was defeated on hte fourth platform, it went to a cutscene without showing him destroying that platform. So I think we must have a buggy version of the game. Is that possible?
