Looking Ahead: Gaming In 2012 (Q1)

Mass Effect 3

Developer/Publisher: BioWare/Electronic Arts
Platform: PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3
Release Date: 03/06/12

Why you should care:

Because the entire world is going to shut down March 6 when the third and final game in the Commander Shepard Trilogy drops on all three (worthwhile) platforms, and you don’t want to be left out. You know it’s going to be awesome, but the question is, how awesome? How about Reapers versus Thresher Maws. That’s how. Expect multiple outcomes, mind blowing set pieces, visceral combat and of course, Commander Shepard’s inability to end a conversation without being awkward.

Street Fighter X Tekken

Developer/Publisher: Capcom/Capcom
Platform: PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Vita
Release Date: 03/06/12

Why you should care:

This one might be overshadowed by the return of Soulcalibur in January, but even if Capcom has flooded the market with fighting games recently, it’s a keeper. Mashing up the Tekken and Street Fighter franchises with the interesting twist of giving players the chance to play Tekken in side-scroll Street Fighter style rather than the traditional 3D. Better still, PC gamers won’t be left out, thanks to a Windows version sure to top whatever the aging Xbox and Playstation 3 consoles can still deliver.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Developer/Publisher: Ubisoft Paris/Ubisoft
Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, DS, PSP
Release Date: 03/06/12

We had hands-on with Future Soldier at E3 last year, and liked it quite a bit. It features an excellent co-op system that doesn’t designate a lead player. Instead, players decide for themselves during play. Missions have clear objectives, but the freedom granted to players in how they attend to them manages to make every player a critical part of any mission. It’s too bad the PC version was cancelled, but even if it’s likely to lose something by being all things to all consoles, it has the makings of a great co-op focused shooter.

Also confirmed for March: MLB 12: The Show, Ridge Racer Unbounded (03/06); Tales of Graces (03/13); Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 (03/20); Kid Icarus: Uprising (03/23).

Last but not least, release date TBD…

It looks like a lot of wizard-y games, but I’m really looking forward to The Darkness II, especially if it doesn’t have a gigantic bug that prevents you from finishing the game.

Mass Effect 3 before I’m too old to play it, too blind to see the screen, senile to remember how. . . .
