Looking Ahead: Gaming In 2012 (Q1)

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Developer/Publisher: Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment/Valve
Platform: PC, Mac, Xbox 360, Playstation 3

Why you should care:

The franchise spawned by the most successful Half-Life modification in history finally returns after more than 7 years for almost everyone except Wii owners. Global Offensive offers gameplay very similar to previous iterations, but will incorporate new features, like Arsenal Mode (based on a popular Counter-Strike mod), and molotov cocktails. Currently in closed beta, it’s expected to go open sometime in early 2012 and see final release before Q2.

Tribes: Ascend

Developer/Publisher: Hi Rez/Hi Rez
Platform: PC

Why you should care:

A F2P FPS in the Tribes franchise, running on the Unreal engine and featuring a variety of gameplay modes FPS hardcores have come to expect, Tribes: Ascend isn’t going to change the universe. But the Tribes series gave us multiplayer tanks, jetpacks and the ability to glide around (“ski”) instead of tedious walking. So you know damn well Tribes: Ascend is going to be fun. And who can argue with free? Put your PC to good use and grab this one when it drops sometime in Q1 ’12.

Diablo III

Developer/Publisher: Blizzard/Blizzard
Platform: PC
Release Date: Q1 2012

Why you should care:

Simply put, more than Mass Effect 3, more than BioShock Infinite, this is going to be THE game of 2012. What else is there to say? A direct sequel to Diablo II taking place some twenty years later, Diablo III is as good an update of a classic series as any we’ve seen since Starcraft 2. Our brief hands-on with the pre, pre, pre beta last summer blew us away. A couple of GameFronters are currently playing the hell out of the still-ongoing closed-beta and it’s apparently magical. There’s no release date yet because Blizzard famously refuses to put something out on an arbitrary schedule, but all signs point to Q1, 2012.

Final note: You’re probably wondering where Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm and BioShock Infinite are. They’re still TBD and likely Q2, hence their not being included here.

It looks like a lot of wizard-y games, but I’m really looking forward to The Darkness II, especially if it doesn’t have a gigantic bug that prevents you from finishing the game.

Mass Effect 3 before I’m too old to play it, too blind to see the screen, senile to remember how. . . .
