Looks Like Youtube Is Building Apps for Xbox, Playstation and Wii
Right now, it’s possible to view YouTube videos on your PS3 and Wii, but you have to use the console browser, and stuff does not look great there; on PS3 it’s particularly bad, because the max res it’ll stream the videos is 240p, which just looks horrendous on a big TV.
YouTube, being like the second biggest website on Erf, really wants to be on your TV, though. Toward that end, they’ve got apps for some internet-enabled TVs and blu-ray players, but as Netflix will tell you, there are a ton more people with game consoles than there are who have those things. My totally unscientific anecdotal evidence to support this is that nobody I know has an internet-connected TV and only two have an internet-connected blu-ray player.
Anyway, it looks like YouTube is looking to get into the console game now, or at least a Google job posting seems to indicate that, considering the no. 1 responsibility listed for the job is “Build the next generation game-console-based TV experience with You Tube video content.”
That’s pretty clear, I think. Something new to look forward to in the next round of big console updates, because you’d think this would open the door for a tone of cool in-game things, like video recording. Imagine being able to easily post some replays of your Blood Stone 007 matches. That’s be awesome. (Too soon, Phil. Too soon.)
