I love LotRO because I love the lore of LotR and love how Turbine has created the game and follows the lore well. Being able to walk in Middle Earth is a blessing.

Reason why I love lotro is not only for the lore and the chance to be a hobbit. I’ve met some of the best players I’ve ever encountered and most have become real life friends and those friendships are something that no [Black Pearl] can ever replace!

I just love all the festivals LOTRO has — some are better than others. I loved the anniversary event this year. Had so much fun collecting all the new mounts from it!

Why? Because who would turn down an adventure in the LOTR universe.
It might not be the perfect game, but the setting is one of the best.

LOTRO is awesome because it’s based on a great story, in a huge world with lots of details. They’ve done a great job transferring the feel of middle earth to the game.

Dern

On April 24, 2012 at 8:02 am

It is the only LotR game so far (and I have played many over the years, believe me) to get close to capturing the huge, wonderfully detailed world Tolkien created.

The music is nice, too :)

I love LOTRO since I discovered it. I started reading the LOTR when I was 14 (many many years ago) and I’ve read them every year since. I started playing D&D in 1974 and i’ve been playing that ever since. LOTRO seemed the perfect blending of my two loves. It is. I just discovered it last September. I already have 2 level 75s, 1 lvl 70, and another 4 between 38 and 40. This game simply rocks. It’s really taken over all my free time. I don’t even watch TV anymore, it’s just LOTRO. I’m so glad I found the game and all the friends I’ve made in it. I listen to a few LOTRO-related podcasts every week. I read the guides and use Lotro-wiki daily. I’m 100% on board with LOTRO and I forsee playing it even more once I retire (several years away yet) and when I have a day off, I’m playing LOTRO.

It’s always a pleasure to ride the hills of the Shire or the old roadways of Enedwaith and find new adventures just around the next turn.

I love LotRO for being a game that not only caters to the endgame crowd, but also tries to offer all of its players a wealth of RP opportunities and “fluff” – cosmetic system, emotes, festivals etc.

I love LotRo mostly because it is based on my favorite book series the LotR. It was also my first major MMO so I have a lot of fond memories of the hours I spent playing with my friends.

LobsterMobster

On April 24, 2012 at 8:04 am

I love it for reasons that have nothing to do with Tolkien. In fact, I’m not all that big on the books in the first place. It’s still a really solid and deep MMO with a great culture, great players and beautiful landscapes. I don’t get a thrill out of talking to Gandalf or Strider but I can still go to the Prancing Pony in my new Present costume and play Safety Dance, or go to the Misty Mountains and watch the aurora in the night sky. Or I can just relax and do some farming while I watch something on Netflix. And I don’t need to worry about people spamming their goldfarming services, or anyone named xX!-HeAdShOt-!Xx spamming profanity. I don’t need to worry about being a “noob,” or not being able to cut it in PvP.

I love LOTRO not because it’s an excellent Lord of the Rings MMO, but because it’s an excellent MMO, period.

I totally love lotro because of the amazing world it brought to live, something I dreamed of since I was 7 years old and got my father’s old copy of the hobbit in my hands.
It has amazing graphics, an unusual pvp world and you can just do everything in it. I have tried rp’ing, raiding, pvp’ing, crafting or just walking and sitting around and I still think back in joy of all those moments. I remember the first thing I did when I got online for the first time was just press F12 and run around looking at all the amazing sceneries and take screenshots of every corner. ^_^
That’s a long time ago by now but every once in a while I just open my old maps and go through it, and then I always have to start a new character and just go run around, level a bit, have fun, talk with people and just enjoy it.
Here’s to a happy 5 years and 5 more to come! :D Thank you turbine for making sure middle-earth online got real! <3

Lord of the Rings Online is pretty much one of the few games where I can log on and just relax rather and explore than focusing on ‘end game’. The community is pretty much one of the nicest I’ve experienced too with people generally being extremely helpful. Just walking around and looking at the fantastic scenery is probably gives me the most epic feeling of the world and just how large it really is.

why do i love LOTRO? well i was introduced to the game by my then boyfriend (now husband) and after 2 years I’m still playing. why do i play? because of the story, the graphics (truly beautiful work guys), and of course for the community. i’ve made so many friends thanks to LOTRO, i’ve joined raids and even co-lead one now. i love LOTRO for the experiences it offers, to meet new people, to have laughs, to chase envelopes through Bree hoping a pretty horsey is some how shoved inside, there are so many reasons to love LOTRO. LOTRO even makes an excellent stress reliever, if you’ve had a bad day, just hope on and run around bree as a chicken. the biggest reason i love this game is because it is FUN.

LOTRO is the most awesome game because I can actually go to Middle-Earth with my friends, and explore all the wonderful places that Tolkien wrote about. It makes me feel like I am a part of something big, to be able to help the Fellowship of the Nine to defeat the orcs and everything else blocking their way. It’s almost like I’m a big, though behind the scenes, part of the world of Middle Earth, and I love that! I can actually be someone and make a difference in how things go. (Though not really, lol)

I love the overall feel of LotRO. It’s set in one of the most awesome universes on this planet, it’s got a compelling story, the game looks good, and the gameplay is great. All of this makes the game a great experience, but the biggest reason why I love LotRO, is its player base. People here are mostly helpful, polite, social and overall well mannered. The player base in LotRO is way better than World of Warcraft’s player base, and I talk fom experience.

I love the game. I love the player base. I love LotRO.

I love LOTRO because I feel like I’m a part of Middle Earth, and Tolkien’s stories. It’s fun to explore all around Eriador with my friends. I had a big thing all written out, but the site says I’m leaving comments too quickly (Not sure why) but I don’t feel like writing it all again, so I doubt I win this contest, but I don’t care, I’m off to go play LOTRO and get my new warden leveled up.

Michael

On April 24, 2012 at 8:14 am

Why do I love LOTRO?……

Being a Tolkienite, I love the books, the films too.

LOTRO allows me to be part of the story, enabling me to change the story-line based on how I play, LOTRO even allows me to be an evil ORC via monster play…..

Aside from the close to perfect lore aspect, this MMO has an abundance of events and content to keep me busy on rainy days. The festivals are a welcome break to all the raiding we do, making it a great social tool to gather and have fun with friends from across the globe.

So, I truly LOVE LOTRO, I play it daily, for hours, whilst studying and caring for my partner.

Good luck everyone.

I love LOTRO because it’s such great fun either adventuring solo or with friends, or trying to overcome difficult challenges to make some cool memories to share. The atmosphere is great and all the little extras every year keep it fun because there is always something to do. Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite creations of all time. LOTRO allows me to interact with that world.

I love LOTRO because it makes you feel like you really play a part in saving middle earth and they made the epic books very good. Another reason why i love LOTRO is that they pay much attention on creating beautifull landscapes and scenery´s and the people are very close. Almost everyone will help each other when you ask them, unlike in other MMORPG´s

RonF

Love LOTRO – they have this appeal that keeps bringing people back, even after 5 years. They are doing a great job with keeping the new content coming out.

Michelle

On April 24, 2012 at 8:17 am

The reason I love LotRO is simple: they took Tolkien’s books and recreated that living, breathing world perfectly. In no other MMO have I been able to lose myself so thoroughly in the lore and the land. Even the silly things they add in during festivals (my favorite time of year) are always true to the world that Tolkien created.

Aavyniel

On April 24, 2012 at 8:17 am

I love LOTRO because it allows me a blissful escape from the day, into the vibrant world that Tolkien created and which Turbine continues to flesh out and bring to life. I can be as bad@$$ and violent as I want, and no one can tell me that a girl shouldn’t behave that way, hehe!

Tolkienizer

On April 24, 2012 at 8:18 am

I love LOTRO because it really shows Tolkien’s beautiful Middle-earth, and lets me run around in the world I’ve loved ever since I read The Hobbit, and later The Lord of the Rings, many years ago. So many of the quests, people and places are recognisable from the books, and especially in Moria.

My favourite part of LOTRO is rolling a new hobbit to enjoy the Shire starting area all over again!

Cristian

On April 24, 2012 at 8:18 am

Until five years ago, we were more than happy to live it by reading, by dreaming to become part of a world. Five years ago, we were (and still are) given the chance to finally be one with the story, to interact with our favorite characters, to become part of the effort of the free peoples in liberating their Middle-Earth, now OUR Middle-Earth, of the tyranny of Sauron and each and all evil that has oppresed the world for far too long.

Why do I love Lord of the Rings Online? Because it gave me the chance to be part of one of the most epic stories to ever grace fantasy literature.

I love LoTRO because Bilbo loves adventure, Gollum loves the ring, Beren loves Luthien, Sam loves Frodo, Hobbits love peace, Dwarves love Jewels, Elves love songs, and Men love freedom. I love that Tolkien created such a beautiful masterpeice, and that Turbine has got me the closest to braving the depths of Moria and charging the plains of Rohan that Ill ever be. I love LoTRO, well, because I love it!

Tesh

On April 24, 2012 at 8:20 am

I love LOTRO because it’s one of the best games to evoke a sense of *place*. The Tolkien IP is strongly based on location, and LOTRO has picked up on that and tried to make the text come alive. I may not always like some of the game design decisions, but the world design of LOTRO is very, very strong.

Why do I love lotro? Well for starters, I absolutely love the books! Lotro gives me the opportunity to be part of the story. I’ve also met and built some awesome friendships through this game! From the time I’ve read the book Hobbit, over 20 years ago, I have been in love with the characters, atmosphere, world… Lotro gives me the chance to be a part of that beautiful world. On April 24, 2012 at 8:24 am

I fell in love with LOTRO the first time I played it. I have been a fan of the story since reading The Hobbit almost 30 years ago. Stepping into the story is just frosting. The game hooks me back time and time again. And every time I load it up, I find a new treasure. It took me a year of playing to finally make the journey to Rivendell. I was enjoying the story and gameplay of Bree and The Shire. I ventured into the Lone Lands or North Downs for character building. But I would work my way back to Bree just to see familiar sights. I was running the anniversary gift quests and ended up in Thorin’s Hall. And I really saw for the first time the details of moving from one region to another. The first time I walked into Rivendell valley I had to stop and just look because it was a gorgeous bit of artwork.

I spend a lot of time soloing the quests. But the players I have encountered have been courteous and respectful. There are some who fill the chat with less than positive conversations. But this game, I come back to over and over. It brings a little smile to my face when the splash screen loads (especially when there is a new one loaded). When I enter LOTRO, I find my time to be a complete relaxation and enjoy every moment. Even when I get hammered by orcs or trolls, I still jump back in to face my defeats with enthusiasm and excitement.

My hope is to get my boys (and even my wife) interested. May LOTRO last a long time so we can finish the tale of the Fellowship and beyond.

I’ve always loved LOTR, and from the first time i heard about LOTRO i greatly desired the game, unfortunatley, at the time i couldn’t afford buying the game, but the same day it went Free to Play i downloaded the game and started playing immediatley. Since then i’ve always been playing as much as possible, gone VIP and bought the Isengard expansion. I’ll make this promisse to Turbine: “as long as they give me the same quality experience in Middle Earth as they do today, i’ll stay a customer!” Because who doesen’t love running around in Tolkien’s world slaying orcs, launching fireworks, drinking ale and making awsome outfits?

Despite all the drama, all the changes, it’s still a great game, and fundamentally the best depiction of Tolkien’s Middle-earth in the game industry.

I grew up reading the books, later I enjoyed the movies, but LOTRO really topped both experiences. Being able to see and visit the Prancing pony in Bree, Bag-end in the Shire, the Old Forest, Weathertop… and then later, Moria, Lothlorien has been simply breath-taking. I only joined after it went F2P, but it’s been a wonderful year. Happy Anniversary, and keep up the great work!

In 6th grade, my teacher introduced me to the Hobbit. Over the course of the next year, I was transported to Middle-Earth as I read through the Hobbit and the LotR trilogy. Immediately, the Lord of the Rings books became my gold-standard for fantasy fiction books. I was a little hesitant to start playing LotRO at first, concerned that all of the stories and places would be reduced to nothing more than fetching, escorting, and killing ten of something. But I had nothing to be concerned about. LotRO does an amazing job bringing to life the world of Middle-Earth, such that I begin to use the LotRO map of areas and locations in my head when thinking about the written story. It’s an incredible accomplishment for a game to actually improve and support the story-telling of one of the foundational works of fantasy fiction, but LotRO does. And that’s why I love Lord of the Rings Online.

I love LOTRO for the community. Prior to LOTRO the only mmo I played was Guild Wars, and learning to play a game like LOTRO was a bit overwhelming at first. But people in the game were so friendly that I had no problem getting answers to my questions and figuring things out.

I’ll never forget the first instance I ran, it was Great Barrows, pre free to play. So it was one big instance. The group I was with was a pug but they were so very helpful. They made sure everyone understood what was going to happen before we took on the bosses, and explained fellowship maneuvers which were totally new to me. I loved it, I loved every minute of it! I’ve since tried other games such as wow, and ddo, but nothing compares to fun of playing in LOTRO. Even when the pugs wipe we still manage to have a good time & people don’t really complain too much. Most of the time if they are upset they tend to just leave instead of complaining or raging.

I’ve also made lot’s of friends along the way, people who miss ya when your gone and always give you a warm welcome back. LOTRO is amazing and what makes it amazing is it’s wonderful community. It’s definitely the best out there that I’ve encountered bar none!

I love LOTRO because it is so much fun to be a part of the Lord of the Rings story. Turbine has done such a wonderful job in making players feel like they are part of the story. It’s amazing. They’ve also done an amazing job creating Middle Earth. It looks and feels just like I pictured it when reading the books. Their attention to detail is outstanding! And the communtity of players is the best I’ve ever come across in mmo’s. Nice, helpful, fun people who love the story just as much and enjoy going on the adventures as I do. I love lotro because of the deep lore, the writers write really compelling stories and embed them in-game in strict adherence to the lore of the books, so while they do apply creative license, they also are very careful to throw in lots of geeky references to the books and make sure that everything is plausible to have happened in Tolkien’s world. Re-creating the events from the books are done in suitably epic fashion as well, and Theodred’s Last Stand in particular was a work of art that nearly moved me to tears.

Happy anniversary Turbine.

To actually be able to live the story and partake in it, I knew I had to play the game, and it has been everything I hoped it would be with gameplay and storyline. I’m not worried about the lifetime sub, as I have two founders accounts and two lifetime accounts, but I would love a chance at the Turbine points to pimp out my creeps.

Great game, playing it for four years now and looking forward to Rohan :)
I like the game because of the story which is very close to Tokien but at the same time shifts the focus away from the well-known travels of the fellowship to the wars happening around Middle-earth. Because without the dwarves, elves and men fighting the armies of Mordor, the fellowship wouldn’t have reached Mordor to finish the task!

I love LOTRO because it’s…LOTRO! I LOVED the books and movies. And now I LOVE the game. It’s fun to play and be in the action of the books and movies we all know and love so much. Plus, they add the special festivals (winter, fall, spring, summer, and anniversary). Doesn’t hurt either that my favorite class to play is Minstrel…and I tank my mini hard when soloing. Loved the books, loved the movies, but that isn’t why I love Lotro. You have the choice to do so many things from caving in the skull of a lowly goblin to challenging the evil baddies of Middle Earth. If that isn’t enough you can also wander around the massive landscapes and find those little things that prove that the lore is always in mind in development.

If you just feel like hanging out in the city and listening to some good music, why break out your lute and play a ditty, gather a crowd get some friends and put on a concert. When you are done break out your pipe and relax under the stars of the Middle Earth sky.

There is so much more going on in the game than simply grinding through quests, leveling and raiding. There are even classes where yelling at your foe can be devastating to them, that is something that grabbed me from the get go during the trial period. On top of that to have the rich history behind these environments providing so much variety in stories and mission types that there is always a new thing to experience. Add to that the festivals and there really is a lot going on in Lotro’s Middle Earth, especially for the wander (/proudly shows off the title) like me.

The Lord Of The Rings universe is an incredible masterpiece of epic and fantasy. And his game, LotRO, give us the possibility to travel and discover arround the Tolkien’s lands. It has been created with care and affection, being respectful of the books and their followers. Middle Earth lives in the game.

Well, the biggest reason why I love LOTRO and continue playing it is because of the lore and the care to the detail that the devs put into the game. For me, it’s amazing to be able to go into an area like the Shire and then go and read the books and you can see the specific details that they took directly from the books to be able to craft this masterpiece.

Also, I really enjoy the community of the players. It seems like there are a lot better overall people on LOTRO that other MMOs that I’ve tried, and for that reason, I’m sticking with LOTRO.

Happy Anniversary!

Well, first of all, The Lord of the Rings is just awesome in itself. The ability to immerse yourself in Tolkien’s world is fantastic.

But on a more personal note, it has been a way to spend time with my family, even when I’ve lived far from home. Being able to login and chat and play with my dad when I went away to college, and being able to play with the the man I eventually married when he graduated a year ahead of me, allowed us to at least for a while feel like we were together.

Jeroen

After reading the books and watching the movies, I decided to start playing actually just to see how much the game would look like the description in the books/movies.
And I fell in love with the beautifull world of Middle-earth right away. And that’s why I still play :D
I don’t mind if I don’t win, but please make sure that regular gamers get those prizes.

The first book that I read on my own was “The Hobbit”, which I read to my little brother as a bedtime story when I was five. Bilbo’s trolls, Goblintown, Elves, all of it was enchanting. Later, we would read through the Lord of the Rings as our own escape. It was easy to find identity within the pages of Tolkien.

Having trouble in school? Let’s read some Tolkien. Feeling down about something? Let’s read some Tolkien.

When I graduated high school and went to college, it was tough on my brother and myself; we had effectively lost each other as a best friend.

Shortly after, I discovered Lord of the Rings Online and was hooked immediately. I eagerly forwarded the information to my brother who was equally excited to dive in. Our mains, my Champion Angalph, and his Lore Master Galorandir, took in the world one quest at a time.

We found ourselves wandering through the Shire, hanging out at the Inns and fishing in remote locations. In later levels, we delighted in finding Bilbo’s Trolls in the Trollshaws and spent (and still do spend!) afternoons chatting by the trolls, shooting off fireworks, or otherwise celebrating.

While neither of us play as much as we once did, LoTRO is still our escape. Feeling down about finals? Let’s walk through Rivendell. Get a bad mark on an exam? Let’s go hunt some orcs.

While there are many ways to stay in touch with those close to us, LoTRO was a uniquely bonding force between my brother and I. It was (and is!) a way to explore a universe that has enchanted us since before we started elementary school.

LoTRO is more than a game to us, it’s access to a whole new world.

The Lord of the Rings is by far the best online game period. It combines all the right elements that anyone would love in a MMO. anything from the Music system, the UI, Raids, skirms, cosmetics, etc…
I have seen a lot of other MMO’s and I have been displeased with how the mechanics of the games work. LOTRO has made it easy to use and is always improving.
I played this game one time and was hooked. My wife played once and is hooked. HOw much happier can one guy be always having a gaming partner!
It would be easier for me to list what I don’t like about Lotro and that is I can’t play 24/7 lol.

So many reasons to love LOTRO… I love all the little things in it that make my inner Tolkien geek happy, like the several quests where you end up encountering characters like Gollum, Elrond and the assorted members of the fellowship. I like how solo-friendly the game is, since while I like talking with people in-game I’m most comfortable questing by myself. I love how overall friendly and helpful most of the player base is. I was leery at first when they went FTP, and now I’m finding I enjoy the larger player base it’s given the game, plus the fact that during those times when I can’t afford to keep up my subscription, I can still play, even if on a more limit basis. The game is old enough that it’s not up to the graphical standards of more recently released games, but it’s still got many beautiful environments and I often find myself taking time out of running around questing to just enjoy the view.

Lord of the Rings online gave me so much. It gave me an appreciation for the depth and beauty of Tolkien’s Secondary World. It gave me an appreciation for a form of gaming I’d dismissed as a simple money grab. But, more than anything, Lord of the Rings Online gave me a fantastic kinship that has taught me the definition of “fellowship.” The game it a near-perfect rendition of Middle-earth, but the developers, community and players are ones weave it into a symphony.

I definitely like being able to unfold the backstory of a very epic tale–it feels good to be an important behind-the-scenes type of character while the actual story focuses on the overt heroes.

It’s the lore that get’s you. You enter a world masterfully crafted by Tolkien, and it comes to life. It hit me the first time I entered Rivendell, then further on into Moria, and now into Orthanc. The game comes alive, and your first playthroughs those moments from the books as you follow the fellowship after the fact just make your heart skip a beat. Any high fantasy fan would love the game, especially if they loved Tolkien. My newest addiction is PvMP. Epic raid battles. LOTRO has something for everyone, and best part, you never HAVE to pay a cent!

I have played Lord of the Rings now for five years and it has never, ever been boring. The detail in the game is astounding. I keep one character slot for deleting and rerolling, just because I love the starter areas :D Of my other 13 characters, 6 are at end-game, where I find the group raiding to be very exciting and challenging.
As a single mom unable to go out, and refusing to own a television, LOTRO has become a part of my social life. Where else could you possibly play with people from South Africa, Turkey, Belgium, Mexico, Poland, Croatia, the UK and most of the rest of Europe? We even had a Chinese gold farmer in kin for a while – she was a 32 year old housewife who loved Tolkien’s stories and wanted to play the game, but game cards just weren’t available in China, so she sold gold to a company for game cards.
I look forward very much, each evening, to rejoining my friends in Middle-Earth, for such a wide variety of fun :D

My favorite bits about LotRO is the coherent story. Tolkien put a lot of effort into making it great and Turbine holds fairly close. It’s this that holds this game over WoW or anything else for me: I won’t go around the bend and see a fighting panda bear!

Why I love LOTRO?
Well, it’s amazing: the graphics, the quests, the way you need to develop your character… but the main part is that I’m always playing with my wife. Whenever the sky is grey (and considering I live in London that’s quite often) we just stay at home playing, having fun… Laughing and enjoying that really neat game that Turbine put together following Tolkien’s greatest trio logy.

I love being a part in this great story. And it’s great to get to see all the places and characters from the books and be able to explore them on your own. I’ve always been a big fan of the books, including the copius other works of Tolkien and the ability to jump into a Middle-Earth so visually spectacular was more than enough reason for me to start playing.

Since then I’ve gone through the areas with different characters and strategies and each time I discover something new – be it Bilbo’s trolls in the Trollshaws to Roverandom in Evendim. The attention to detail never ceases to leave me in wonder.

Cheers to 5 years of LOTRO and looking forward to many more.

I love LotRo so much not only because it’s based on the masterpiece of Tolkien but also because it has a certain charm over it unlike many many other MMO’s that hasn’t been around for as long as LotRo. The game is unique and realistic – in most cases (not a bad thing) and it is built up in a much better way than any other MMO I’ve played – the combat-system is perfect, the animations are cool, the ”not-being-too-overkill” is great (meaning: in other MMO’s one can get flying-mounts, one can get to fight huge machines, some character classes might be better than others – In LotRo all these things are balanced out perfectly so that you don’t feel like it’s being too underkill but neither too overkill. I have played this game since launch in 2007 and it feels like seeing a little baby grow up – I hope to see LotRo’s 10 year anniversary because I have a feeling that this game isn’t even halfway in the journey. This game just can’t stop making new stuff to the players and it is something not every MMO can offer.

LotRo is a true succes in every way. Happy 5th anniversary everybody!! safe travels everyone!! :)

Why I love LOTRO? Well… there are quite a lot of reasons, but I will give you the top three:

3rd place … it’s the place where we could “meet” my childhood heroes – Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas – it was like a dream come true :)
2nd place … it has a great community and I was able to find here a lot of people which I’m happy to call them friends not only in game, but also in real life
1st place … because it offered me something I never expected… an amazing partner, not only for quests and instances, but also for doing the laundry or preparing dinner… the elfish girl of my dream… my clan leader in game, and my future wife in real life :)

I love LOTRO because it’s relaxing. No matter how much content I’ve done or seen, it always still amazes me everywhere I go. I can go to any place, turn the music up, and just sit there. It’s relaxing. The music while in battle always makes you feel like you need to do better and work harder to kill the bad guys.

LotRO for me is more than just a game. It’s a hub where I can find people who share my passion and we can explore that in a way that no normal conversation can encompass.

I role-play on the Imladris server, and through that I have made lifelong friends with whom I can share my life. We talk not just about Tolkien but about work, and home life, and anything else that crosses our minds. But mostly, we role-play. It’s so much more than just watching a movie, it’s *being* the movie. We get to experience the world that the books and movies didn’t get to explore, the place where there isn’t a hero saving the world, but just a chef working to pay the rent or a magistrate struggling to keep the law.

For me, LotRO has been an escape from reality with friends that has made an epic all of itself, and that’s been a beautiful thing. We exchanged Christmas gifts this past year, and all of them were influenced by our characters in the game – I got a book about potato recipes for my character, a chef who loves potatoes, and we all got matching necklaces to match our characters.

To some people it is a game where they get to meet book characters, or follow the path of the movies. To others it is a place where they make friends and escape homework. But for me, LotRO is the place where I go to become someone else and live my own fairytale in the most magical place of Middle-Earth.

LOTRO is best game which has PvE. Also if you read the books and then if you find out that there is a game about it and it’s limitless! I mean you can do everything in this game it’s like paradise for a LOTR fan. I have to admit that Turbine did great job with this game. If you play LOTRO you will understand that players are friendly and they will help you you in everything. Book quests are wonderful, I was very excited when I meet Tom Bombadil. Middle Earth is limitless and LOTRO is limitless so that’s why I love it!
As a Tolkien fan I can say this game is the place where I find myself also my friends.
Thank you J.R.R Tolkien, thank you Turbine. Happy Birthday LOTRO.

I’ve loved Tolkien’s story since I was small. LOTRO has given me the chance to immerse myself in the story completely in a way that the books and movies don’t allow. I love how my character storyline is interwoven with that of the Fellowship rather than just being set in the same world.

There are many reasons I love LotRO:
1) The community (Arkenstone rocks! especially my kin, Flame Imperishable!)
2) The gameplay – especially with some of the recent (update 6) changes, classes have clearly-defined roles, and options
3) I’m walking around Arda – what could trump this?

Happy Anniversary, LotRO!

IMO Lotro is still the gold standard for fair F2P gameplay. Some people may complain but they’re extremely generous to free users. I’ve met a couple in my travels who are at end-game with at least one character and have all content purchased without spending a cent.

Not my style though, I’m happy dropping $20 for points now and then.

The thing I love the most about LOTRO is the immersive Middle Earth experience – not just for myself, but especially with my family (being in a family Kinship). I remember going together to see the Balrog – Durin’s Bane, if you will, and being in awe of the great job they had done of making it so imposing and impressive. My brother commented, “That’s a lot of Dread for something so dead.” It is so much fun to be a part of Middle Earth, and to tell my own story.
Happy Anniversary to LOTRO – I’m becoming a lifetime member – how about making it official? :-D

I’m one of those people who reads The Lord of the Rings books yearly (since around 1994). Why do I love lotro? Because it feels like i’ve spent most of my life jumping back into Middle Earth, learning its history, it’s people, it’s stories; and now Turbine has made this truly in-depth, beautiful

world – I can be a part of Middle Earth’s stories too! :) Tolkien once wrote that he hoped others would carry on his work, adding their own ideas to his creation, and part of this wish had been honoured by lotro.

Even after 5 years of playing the game, I can still go back to the Shire and be amazed by how well they fleshed out the world. Hobbits worrying about pie deliveries while the rest of the world is fighting off monsters really sets the tone for the whole region.

Happy Anniversary LotRO!

It’s hard to nail down exactly why those of us that have been here so long love LotRO, but here’s to trying!

I think one reason is that you can tell they have made it a priority to ‘not screw up’ Tokien’s vision. Now before you shrug off that comment, stop and think about how difficult that task actually is. Well LotRO has not disappointed!

Not everything has gone perfect, not everyone has been happy all the time, but the LotRO team has taken all obstacles in stride, and created a place that I am happy to be a part of as much as I possibly can.

I’m an “instancer” at heart, but leveling alts to re-experience the world, taking part in festivals, participating in epic, insanely famous, story line quests….it is all a very, VERY, good, memorable, and cherished experience.

So again I say, Happy Anniversary LotRO! Thank you for letting me take this ride with you!

What I’ve always loved about LOTRO, is being able to play in the Lord of the Rings universe in a persistant world, and watch as the story that I am so familiar with unfolds, but be able to see how it affects the rest of Middle Earth from a perspective that the stories do not offer. Its one of the few IPs that really has not strayed a lot from its origins, yet still remains fun for casual gamer lovers of Lord of the Rings.

There is multiple reasons why i love lotro. First it’s because it set in the this fantasy world with the story of Lord of the rings which i love. Secondly i don’t play always and its got enough main story and interesting side quest so i can play it loooong, but it also got instances so i can team up with others and own some bosses. Why I love Lord of the Rings Online? To much to name!

For a MMO that is inspired by a world like the one J.R.R. Tolkien created must be a very hard task and in my eyes Turbine succeeded in that big time, Lovely storyline’s that sometimes are connected to the books but are never lorebreaking. For a lore-seeker as myself I can cross maps time after time and find new interesting things that are brilliant! And much more reasons why i love LotRO but if i write them all down this comment will be entered to late.

I love the character classes of LOTRO. All are complex without being overly difficult to play, and while there is the trinity for dungeon runs, each class can easily quest on it’s own without feeling too powerful or not powerful enough.

I have never played video games on a regular basis until I was introduced to LOTRO 8 months ago. Since then, it is safe to say I have become addicted. I love the graphics, the music, the storyline – basically everything. I love that there is no rush to get anything accomplished; I can quest & level, relax & craft, spend hours putting together amazing outfits, or I can just ride around and explore the game without doing anything in particular. Everyone has been so helpful and nice whenever I have had any questions; nobody has looked down on me or treated me bad, just because I’m not as experienced as them. I love my kinship, I love my characters. It is so nice after a long day at work, where my co-workers do not greet me with “Mae Govannon”, ride around on horses, have cool accents, or dress in exquisite Elven gear to be able to go home & lose yourself for awhile in a game where all of those things are possible. In short – it rocks hardcore.

Happy Birthday guys, thanks for all you do!

I’m thankfull to Turbine for it’s masterpiece. If Tolkien were alive, he would surely love the embodiment of the world he created in his works. Moreover, the world created by Turbine is more alive, more realistic, and it is growing from day to day. I absolutely love Turbine’s interpretation of the events described in the LotR together with the details introduced by the developers.

I fell in love with Tolkiens work when I had to read The Hobbit for school. The world he creates within his books is simply beautiful so when I found LOTRO I was over the moon knowing I could experience Tolkiens world in such a beautiful hands on way.
Everytime I log on it amazes me that I find something new even after playing this long.
There is no other game to compare.

There is so much to love about this game. The community itself is generally a friendlier place, very different from a lot of MMO’s I’ve played. The people that you encounter on your adventures add a whole new depth to this amazing world we get to step into each day.

I was raised on Tolkien and have grown into a great fan of all things Lord of the Rings. Lotro has given me a way of stepping out of my daydreams and into the ability to walk around and explore this amazing place that I’ve always only imagined. So many places in Middle Earth never fail to take my breath away. Walking around Lothlorien or seeing Rivendell for the first time, or exploring my second home in the shire…Turbine has done an amazing job at bringing it to life for us all.

On April 24, 2012 at 11:25 am

I love LOTRO because of how much of original Tolkien lore can be found in it. Obscure things, mentioned only once and never picked up again. Things tucked in the corner of the Appendixes which some didn’t read. References to things from works like The Hobbit or Silmarillion brought to life for the first time of all adaptations. But what I love more is re-reading The Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and finding things that I forgot about since my first read, that are now familiar because of LOTRO. During previous readings names like Annuminas, Forsaken Inn, Enedwaith meant little to me, so the information didn’t stick. Now I can visualize them in full and thus can better understand their role in original work – LOTRO makes me know Tolkien’s works much bette!

I love LOTRO because it gives every fan the chance to follow in the footsteps of their favorite character’s and more importantly travel through Middle Earth and really feel as if your there. The interpretation of famous sights from the book are fascinating (I.e. Rivendell, Bree, Old Forest, Lothlorien and of course Moria) in some ways it gives you more of a chance to explore and learn even more about the world of Middle Earth than even reading the books. And its generally the most fun game I think ive ever played, ive yet to play another game that do festivals as good as LOTRO as well.

I have lifetime subscriptions to four MMOs and an account with another one that has since gone free-to-play. Of all of these, the only one I ever log in to is LotRO.

For me, the attraction is the richness of the story. I love the epic quests’ connection to the books. Other quests are often deeply rooted in the lore as well. Of all the MMOs I have played, this one comes closest to recreating the world of the original format. The artwork helps with the immersion, as it all feels right (and is beautiful, especially with high-resolution graphics on ultra-high settings).

The lifetime membership at launch was the best $199 I ever spent!

I love LOTRO for the may it handles Tolkien lore. Keeping it very accurate but at the same time taking the risks of tell their own stories. All the epic books so far have been incredible, you really feel you are in Middle Earth making a difference against Sauron. The landscapes are the other aspect that makes me love LOTRO: every single map is beatiful and very detailed, the books really become alive when playing LOTRO

When I was in 6th grade, my father passed on his Tolkein books: Hobbit and The Trilogy. I read them over and over, untill the covers ripped off, the pages started crumbling, and there was mildew-ey odor. LOTRO gives me a portal into that world I knew as an adolescent…and I hope to pass on that legacy to my children.

I think LOTRO is a great game because you can live in the world Tolkien meant to made. You can see the beauty of Elves, or being a Hobbit, not knowing anything about the real world and it’s history. You can climb high in the mountains or go to the shores. You can be a Hobbit just fishing and eating pies all day. Or you can safe the world from darkness. Well, you can talk ages about Middle-Earth and Arda. But it’s impossible to describe either this world or this game.

Juan D

On April 24, 2012 at 12:00 pm

I love LOTRO for the way it handles the lore. Is very accurate, but they also take the risks of telling their own stories. All the epic books so far have been a blast! You really feel living in Middle Earth and making a difference in the fight against Sauron.

I also love LOTRO for the landscapes. Middle Earth comes to life on every single map existing. They are so beautiful and detailed. Many of the just like I imagined them countless times

We like the medieval atmosphere, the cosmetic, the crafting system, the mounts and in particular all of the classes! At the end we like everything! I love LotRO because it restored my faith in MMOs. The last MMO I played for more than 100 hours was Ultima Online, which probably was one of the very first MMOs out there. In the last 5 years I always switched MMOs, all F2P, never playing one more than 2-3 months or 100 hours. Now I have been playing LotRO since 1 1/4 years (exactly to the current date) and I’m not getting sick of it, yet. And its actually the first MMO I ever paid any money for – but that was after playing almost 500 hours, so it was worth it. I never liked subscription based MMOs, because I’m paying whether or not I’m actually playing, and LotRO only needs me to pay anything if I’m progressing (and can’t achieve the amount of Turbine Points via the game itself, which is also a reason why I love LotRO: you don’t even have to pay anything to play the entire game). And charging me only when I’m progressing to a new area is a much fairer paying model IMO.
Just hearing the Shire or Thorins hall background music makes me feel all fuzzy – something almost no game accomplished just 1 year after playing it for the first time.

And don’t get me started on the community there, I don’t have enough time to write all the good stuff about them.

Happy 5th Anniversary! May you life at least another 5 years – and then 10 more!

Besides being a fan since I read my brother’s copy of The Hobbit when I was in grade-school, LOTRO is unlike any MMO I have played. I have never found a friendlier or supportive community than the one present in LOTRO. I will Fo.d myself wanting to take a break from the game but missing my kin and friends in-game. The level of commitment by the developers and community to Professor Tolkein’s lore has always impressed me. The festivals and scenery, the detail in armor and landscape, everything points to developers who actually care about the world they create and we play in.

I never feel pressured in the game to try and adopt a playstyle that’s not right for me. I love LotRO because Turbine has faithfully created a universe based on the Professor’s stories and lore, and they keep it friendly, cheat- and exploit-free, and the average player is older and more mature than found in most MMOs. It all adds up to a wonderful community and a great, frequently updated game!

LOTRO is a one of those games you can’t put down, but if you do, you will come back. Part of the reason I keep coming back is because the open nature of PVP and the excitement you get when running group content. You can run the same instance but every time it’s different, depending on how the group is made up. It’s one of those games that can actually challenge you, mainly because there is no end game.

I think LOTRO has done a respectable job over the years in terms of class development. They’ve stuck true to their ideals and made every class a fun experience. They’ve mastered new ways for us to progress our characters, to make them more unique and to get epic loot!

The community has been excellent, I would say the good apples far outnumber the bad. LOTRO has manage to attract some great players and people. Keep up the great work LOTRO team and happy anniversary.

The scenery and storywork is just gorgeous. Exploring Middle Earth and, peripherally, the tale of the Fellowship, is simply fascinating. There’s nothing like riding over a cliff as you gawk at giant dwarf faces carved into the stone of Moria, or dabbing your eyes a little bit while you, in a dream, listen to exchanges between Frodo and Sam, then the bantering of Legolas and Gimli, then finally witness the troubled gaze of Boromir and the foreboding of the turmoil to come. So beautifully done, and such a privilege to experience it.

I love LotRO because it takes the classic works of Tolkiens fiction and mashes it into an open world MMO where I can live, own a house, ride horses, slay evil. It is all the things I wanted to have and do when I first read the books when I was a child, to actually be part of that epic tale.

Ranph

Where to start?! The game allows us the player to live and play in the world and realms of Middle-Earth. To take on the roles of the various hero’s of the story. And to write our own tale within this great story. As to the game itself, thru awesome graphics and beautiful song you follow along one of the greatest storyline quests ever introduced in an MMO. And if you really want to loose your breath, find a quiet spot ingame during the night, pull out your pipe lay back and watch the stars. If this doesn’t sell you on this game then try the pie!

Lotro is, for me, the only game that combines good graphics, a well thought-out battlesystem, humor and a (overall) mature player-base. I can easily log in for hours without doing battle and still enjoy my time online. It took me 1 year to convince my girlfriend to level up her lvl7 champion. After I let my PC on one day, she started playing. That was 2 years ago, and she enjoys the game just as much, levelling her 4rd character to level75.

It really is the lore. Being a part of the story, running through the shire delivering mail, fighting for the free peoples of middle earth…The mechanics aren’t necessarily unique, but in this game, it’s the lore that grabs you. A great implementation of a story if you ask me. I remember watching the movies, and seeing just how much the game resembled it. And then reading the books, and just how much more detail the game included than the movies.

Rob

On April 24, 2012 at 6:57 pm

I enjoy LOTRO because it allows me to experience the books in a small part, especially when you can go to a location mentioned in the books and actually see part of the story – Weathertop, Old Man Willow, Bilbo’s Trolls, the broken bridge in Moria, The Prancing Pony, the Party Tree, and the burned hill top where the fought off the wolves just to mention a few.

What I love most about LOTRO is the sense of inmersion within the game. Turbine has crafted a game that lets you go to the places in Middle-earth that have only been mentioned within the books but recreates them in a great way. Why do I love LOTRO? There are so many reasons; but mostly, it’s the incredible effort the team have put into painstakingly transferring every single detail of Tolkien’s world into the world of the game. From little things like the Neekerbreekers in the Midgewater Marshes to the Walking Tree NPC in the Bindbole Wood – did you know both of these things received a passing mention in the book? – the world of Middle Earth has been brought to life with such accuracy that I can only begin to imagine how thoroughly they combed the text of the book to catch every smallest reference. Better yet, they use their own creative genius to fill in the gaps and further flesh out the world, while still managing to stay true to the spirit and atmosphere of Tolkien’s imagination!

I love LOTRO for the immersion – the devs have put a ton of effort and care into making their game look and feel like Middle-Earth, and the results speak for themselves. There’s nothing in any other MMO that can compare to your first trip into Moria, or your first ride into Rivendell, or even helping deliver mail across the Shire.

The reason I love Lord of the Rings Online is the music. A lot of effort was put into it and it shows, especially when you change scenery. The ambient sounds and music change and it sets the mood perfectly.

I love LotRO! I get to meet amazing people, and go on adventures with old friends, even if I can’t see them all the time. I also love the feeling of going to all of the famous places in Middle-earth and meeting the main characters of the novels. I still get excited every time I see a member of the original fellowship.

I love LotRO for EVERYTHING. I love it for the realism that it brings with itself – realistic fantasy world based on the best and the first fantasy setting ever created; for the wonderful music; for the best hand-crafted landscapes in the MMO industry; for the amazing friendly community; for the EPIC storyline (What MMO has had the STORYLINE five years ago?); for the feel that only LotRO gives to you — the feeling that you are a part of grandiose events taking place in the wast living world; and for the Middle-Earth of course! It’s the best MMO I’ve discovered almost four years ago and playing it since then until now. It gives me so much feeling and memories that no video game will not gift me forever!

The game is simply amazing. The feel of the game is so much like the Middle Earth in the books I grew up with that I feel like my understanding of them is enhanced by playing it.

The lands are fully realized, Moria is more than I ever would have imagined, Mirkwood is just as creepy as in the books. The Shire, my favorite land, is so much a land for hobbits that I can’t now imagine it a different way. It is by far the most thought out game I’ve ever played.

One more thing, the amount of things to actually DO in the game is nearly endless.

Lotro attempted to create the Tolkien world and allows the players to explore and be part of the world. It is an impressive and well designed world that allows us to escape from reality and get ourself lost in Tolkien’s fantasy world as imagined by the developers.

I enjoy looking at the various colours and texture designs on the walls and buildings. If I have a request for the team of developers, it will be keeping up the good work, and work on improving the game further so it can last through the ages just like Tolkien’s great books.

Hey!

I love Lord of the Rings Online! When i was a child, before the films i know the whole story. These books tech me to love reading! At the first time when i play LotRO i not really love it… After the CGI and masks of the film it’ looks like so strange. But after i try it again. And again. And again. Something is really cool in this game. I really don’t know what. Maybe the athmosphere or the lore… maybe all of it. Today i think this is one of the best mmo! Thanky you Turbine!

LOTRO is a way to relax, enjoy time with friends, counter Middle-Earth’s most dangerous places with them and enjoy your victory afterwards.

It is a world that you can get totally lost in, feeling and being the character you play and not worry about the day after. LOTRO can do that to you.

I LOVE LOTRO as it has opened up a new way of reviving the old Tolkein stories, i have always been a Tolkein obsessed fan but never quite pick up onto it so seriously until i started to play this game, Lotro has helped me into a wider lotr community with a size i never thought existed before. The designing of games is a practice that i am trying hard to get into and in my eyes a great example of design can come from turbine. They manage to create a vast and detailed landscape that stays true to the book with the introduction of new aspects. I’m sure any player will remember their first steps into Moria or their first exploration of the shire. LOTRO brings many memories to its fan and a sense of belonging that no other “MMO” is yet able to provide. I live in Australia and find it hard to get into MMOs as many discriminate our time zone and position in the world, but LOTRO provides a large community of Australia players i have quickly settled into. Cant wait for Riders of Rohan to push further limits for LOTRO and position itself as one of the most inclusive games out there with the cooperation of its vast community.

LOTRO is one of the best online games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. After reading all three books and watching all three movies over and over again, experiencing the game made it felt like you were really living the adventure in Tolkien’s amazing imagination. Everything about the game is amazingly close to Tolkien’s Middle-Earth; from the scenery of all the regions, to the background music being played and even to the characters and NPC’s all around Middle-Earth.
I love LOTRO because it lets me experience the fun and adventures of Middle-Earth along with many other friends. I find it was truly a pleasure just roaming around Middle-Earth meeting other players and being excited every time I met a movie character but the best thing about LOTRO so far is I’ve been able to learn many important things that will matter in real life such as co-operation and teamwork or even things like how important it is to have friends. LOTRO is truly an outstanding online game and I look forward to the many more updates and adventures in the future. :)

I love LOTRO because of the atmosphere. I’ve read the books three times and I was always fascinated by the complexity of the lore and Middle-Earth. And with LOTRO this complexity came to life. The landscape, the epic story and the quests are amazing. Not like other MMO-s, in LOTRO I can spend hours wondering in forests and fishing in rivers. Once you log in a whole new world opens for you.

The reasoin why I love this game so much is because of memories like these. It the time I completed the Lieutenant and his Fell beast on challenge mode. I remember we had practiced a very very long time to get him down. At one evening, we had 2 attempts at it and both failed. Before we wanted to try the third attempt, most of us had to use a toilet break. Before anyone had the chance to leave his/her said, someone said: Nobody go to the toilet! I read in a magazine that people can achieve greater things when under pressure! We all had a laugh, but we decided to listen to him and we all remained in our seats, really wanted to go to the toilet. And he was right, we managed to defeat him for the first time and it was an heck of a ride! The adrenaline rushed through our bodies when the Lieutenant fell. Everyone started to scream and freak out. My mother thought I received good grades from school when she heard my reaction (those turned out to be a bit less… exciting :P ) but she had to laugh as well when we explained it to her. From that day, I never had a similar feeling like that before, when the morale bar of the Lieutenant hit 0.

I like the story, the atmosphere, and after 5 years its really polished as a game. If I had to pin it down to one reason, it would be the player base community. Unlike the community of immature kiddies I found in games like Star Wars (which was a shame as I loved the storylines I saw some of during the beta) the people I’ve met in LOTRO are way more mature and fun to be around. And they keep me logging in after all this time.

I love LOTRO because I love the works of Tolkien. I love the incredible attention to detail displayed by the developers at Turbine. For any given location that I visit, there is no detail of description I can remember from the book, no matter how miniscule, that the developers have not included in their interpretation of Middle-earth. Not only am I truly amazed by this achievement, but I am grateful that through their efforts, I and countless other players can explore Hobbiton, Rivendell, Moria, Isengard, and so many other memorable locations for ourselves.

I love LOTRO because it gives you the opportunity to adventure with some really great people from around the this real world, and live out the J.R.R. Tolkien writings and the movies made from those writings. I have grown up with and greatly enjoyed Mr. Tolkien’s world. I really love lord of the rings because of the story behind it. Throughout the game you see the story of the ring going on and you even know whats going on at certain times when you cant see it in the game, which I think is the best thing about the game. It connects with the books through the lore and makes that whole world real. You can run through lands that you have only read about and imagined before. It takes things from your imagination and makes them interactive.

I love LOTRO beacuse there is so much to do outside of questing, be it just exploring the world of Tolkien or messing around. But a few days ago, being bored in game waiting for some friends to come online I decided to enter chicken session play (where you get turned into a level 1 chicken with 46hp). I decided to challenge myself and see how far I could get my feathered friend without any help except for my wits. After a few hours ducking and diving past every mob this side of Moria (Started in Michael Delving in the Shire) I found my way to Galtrev past hordes of level 75 mobs for a well-earned rest and to mess with some peoples minds. I plan to further my feathered forages by reaching the steps of Orthanc and to eventually reach the white tree in Minas Tirith when it come out.

I’ve always been a HUGE fan on Lord of the RIngs, but seeing Turbine being able to bring Middle Earth into an almost living and breathing MMO instantly took me away from my at the time favorite MMO World of Warcraft. So many things attracted me, the amazing graphics, story and the ability to just quest through most of middle earth with friends or solo. It’s the little things that count, from the npc’s who have their own conversations with each other as I strolled through Bree, to the music system in the game that allows you to dance and play instruments with other players. I feel LOTRO has a real sense of what an MMO should be. Its about the community and having those fun little distractions that doesn’t make me feel like I’m playing the game just to get to the end game stuff. This is why I love LOTRO!

I think the thing I love the most about LOTRO is the emphasis on story and quest content. Or at least that’s how it feels to me. A good example is Update 6 – that content patch contained a new dungeon and a new questing zone. If this was WoW, the patch would revolve around a newfangled raid.

My husband, brother, sister-in-law, and a few other family members had gathered to throw a party, complete with dancing and Superior Carrot Cake for dessert!

I love LotRO because I never got into the Lord of the Rings genre by books or movies before the game. When I first started playing I didn’t know the first thing about why Aragorn was important or what the big deal with the little hobbit people were. After almost a year of gaming though, the game has caught my interest enough that I’ve chosen to dig into the game beyond the in-game story to see where it all began and understand the fan-boy fascination. I stay with LotRO because it has one of the friendliest, most helpful communities in MMOs today… but now I want to know how the story ends as well.

So why i love LOTRO well because you can see Tolkiens masterpiece with your own eyes you can go to place which u have never dreamt of you can be hero and part of Tolkiens epic story. I love that i can learn more from tolkiens epic masterpiece because i dont like to read books so this is best way if you want to know more about Middle Earth. Who would ever thought that you can walk inside stunning places which were only in books. Also in LOTRO people are nice kind and helpful. I also met new friends. And its fun to do instances and have some fun with friends in festivals.

The game’s great because of the huge open world. The earlier zones have really captured the feel of the books quite well. The Shire is still my favorite, and every once in a while, I’ll make a new hobbit just so I can play through that area, again.

LOTRO is just a fabulous way of living in the world of Tolkien. And by that I mean: REALLY living. You can go adventure, fish, craft, explore, kill, RP, drink beer, watch a duel, watch the stars, … the sky is the limit.
I recently re-read the Hobbit and I was amazed about how well Turbine created Middle Earth. It’s actually possible to find every small detail mentioned in the books back in the world of LOTRO. When I see a new town, a ruin, a river or whatever you can imagine, I wonder what the story would be behind that small detail. When I ask some lore-experts, I learn a lot about Middle Earth. Things that I had forgotten about and it makes me want to re-read every book Tolkien has written.

Thank you LOTRO for 5 marvellous years. Happy birthday!

I loved that they had a level 65 quest that involved picking up boar poop for a hobbit to use as fertilizer. The best part about that quest was that it awarded “destiny points” as if my heroic destiny was to supply fertilizer to hobbit farmers. Hilarious.

I loved the books 40+ years ago, our kids loved the books after us, then we all loved the movies (mostly), and now the game. Our extended family plays LOTRO together which provides another way to connect. Weird how chopping wood in a virtual world helps us connect. The family friendly (to us anyway) world makes a place where as a family we can all connect despite the 40 years in age difference between the youngest and the oldest.

Why do I love Lord of the Rings Online?

Within LOTRO I can experience first-hand the creative product of J.R.R. Tolkien, which Peter Jackson’s adaptation first drew me into. It is not just experiencing the journey that the Fellowship took, but instead, fishing occasionally by the riverside, playing music with friends, or running the mail for those lovable hobbits.

LOTRO is also a bit of a refuge. When Star Wars Galaxies closed its doors in December, LOTRO became the home of myself and my fellow friends from SWG. LOTRO reminds us of memories had at SWG, but has also been the beginning of new ones.

I have loved LotRO since I got into the first round betas, and I’ve played avidly since I first touched my characters pixelled foot to the ground of Middle Earth. I love that the team can bring this whole world to life, keeping it as close to the literature as possible, and sometimes doing so with nothing more than a few lines of text. LOTRO immerses me in a world I have loved since childhood, of Dwarves and Hobbits, of danger and adventure. My mother read The Hobbit to me and my sister at bedtime, a chapter at a time, before we saw any media (e.g. the Rankin/Bass animated version) related to Tolkien’s vision. LOTRO comes the closest to my own personal Middle-earth, and is written with humor and poignancy in the quest text — even random NPCs get memorable dialogue.

The reason I love this game is that there is so much lore that exists while still having the gaps needed allowing a player to immerse themselves in a rich story that feels something like what we’d hope the experience would have been if the Fellowship had started from Rivendell with 10 instead of 9. There is great effort taken to make sure that the game “gets it right” without being a slave to it. While we can’t fight alongside our favorite hero from the books at every step, we see them, meet them…even help them in some cases. In a different game, the entire world is the creation of the team and a tool they can use or discard at their will and fancy. Here in LotRO, for better or worse, the developers have a framework they must fit in which precludes most (sadly, not all) the money grubbing tactics seen in other games. The story of our character, while almost the same no matter what class is chosen, does have enough variety to make replaying through areas with other characters less of a chore. I love LotRO because if I want personal advancement for my character, I have things to do. If I want to explore a difficult tactical challenge, I have a variety of choices with 3 man, 6 man, 12 man and 24 man challenges available. If I just want to change my character’s clothes and go listen to a “band” play in a town square I once only read about in books as a child, I can participate there. I can craft items and place them for sale. I can go “hunting” animals or fishing in a secluded pond. I can just be…something other than a middle aged man spending time in front of a computer for a couple hours. It’s truly my escape.

I was introduced to LOTRO almost 2 years ago by my bother-in-law and was immediately shocked at the amount of lore the game had. I have been a life long fan of J. R. R. Tolkien and his writings for over 20 years now and was pleasantly surprised that someone had turned it into a game. At the same time, I was also angered at myself for not knowing that this game existed and that I joined so late in the life of the game!

I have played many games, but none of them have drawn me back like LOTRO has. It created a bond between my bother-in-law and myself that nothing else could have. After many months of playing, we decided to start a small kinship of players from all around the world. While the leadership duties are strenuous at times, I couldn’t be happier. Having the ability to explore Middle-Earth with players from different backgrounds but with a shared interest in the writings of Tolkien is a feeling that I have never felt in a game before.

To add to my excitement, I finally finished reading the Silmarillion for the first time recently, and on top of that, LOTRO will be releasing “Riders of Rohan” soon. I’m ecstatic to say the least, being immersed completely in the world that Tolkien created.

Any lastly, I have never seen a company such as Turbine care so much about its fans! They are always giving away content, points, prizes, etc.! So kudos to Turbine and their ongoing success with LOTRO. Thanks for the fond memories.

Not only does it accurately recreate Middle Earth but it makes the world fun to play in, all of the quests are grouped together so you don’t have to travel far for the next one and festivals add a nice change of pace every once in a while. My wife badgered me into playing it during the open beta, and from day one I was all in to it. Got all my friends to play, and later that day, we were all in game together. After the movies, needed something from LoTR to keep involved in the lore. Love LotRO <3

When i was deployed it was the main way I would stay in touch with friends and family back home. No matter what was going on around me LOTRO provided a means to escape reality and come to peace.

I love LOTRO because it feels like im inside the books, it’s like living in middle earth.
