Lord of the Rings Online Dev Turbine Hit With Layoffs

Warner Bros. Interactive has confirmed an unknown number of layoffs at Lord of the Rings Online developer Turbine Entertainment.

According to a report from Gamasutra, Warner Bros. Interactive issued a statement when confirming the news, but did not disclose how many people were laid off at the studio, or how it would affect LotRO in the future.

The statement to Gamasutra says that the layoffs are part of “normal business processes”:

“As part of our normal business process, we’re routinely looking at the strategic alignment of our company. Unfortunately, in order for us to invest in growth areas at Turbine, we have to eliminate some positions.”

“These are always tough decisions, which we don’t approach lightly, but it’s crucial that Turbine is structured in a way that reflects the current and coming marketplace.”

Turbine released the latest expansion to LotRO, Helm’s Deep, in November. The studio is also working on Infinite Crisis, a DC Comics-themed MOBA that’s currently in the closed beta phase.

We’ve reached out to Turbine about the layoffs and will update this story as more information becomes available.
